This is no surprise to me either...heck...I think some have actually forgotten the words while singing it at ball games! It's a terrible song to begin with as an national anthem!

Yuppers... remember the Girl at the NBA game a few years back...

totally forgot the words and NBA Coach Maureece Cheeks came over and helped her out, by singing the remainder of the song with her.. even the crowd started singing...

I think "The Star-Spangled Banner" is a great national anthem. I think there was a movement afoot a while ago to change it to "America the Beautiful" or something, but that appears to have died after 9/11 reminded us the importance of the flag as a symbol of the unity of our country while under attack.

I tell you what it's a shame that our children can not sing the National anthem but they are force to recited the pledge to the legion every morning in school.

Why not our anthem first.

That is a simple case of brainwashing, no wonder there are so many stupid Americans that think their country can do no wrong.

I think every American should know their national Anthem.

When i was little i learned it shortly after comming to this country. I also learned the pledge of allegiance. I also know my country of origins' national anthem.

There's nothing wrong in being proud of your country. There is something wrong with being arrogant, though.

'Girt by sea' means that australia is surrounded by the seas, sort of like a girtle.

I'm not sure if this is actually true, but Urban Legend has it that several Russian spies were outed with the Star Spangled Banner. In their training on American culture it was overlooked that no one really knew the other verses, so when they started singing verse 2, they were instantly seen as outsiders. Makes a good story anyway.

Geez, how hard would it be to have primary school kids learn the words....*sheesh*
I think every American should know all the words to the first stanza....but, then I think we should also have an official national language in this country. Call me old-fashioned.

Shame on Americans for thinking so little of their country! I wonder how many of these same Americans can sing along with the radio, assuming the words can be understood.
I'll bet it's the smae people who don't know anyting about the Constitution or Bill of Rights.
*sigh*

Yeah I always assumed that "Girt by Sea" meant that it was surrounded by sea.
I agree that its a crummy national anthem. But isnt that indicative of all national anthems? They are all 100+ year old songs so they are not exactly top 40 material are they

I think Rule Britannia is a good song, same as Star Spangled Banner. I actually know both songs, as well as Advance Australia Fair.

What exactly do you think our national anthem SHOULD be like? Maybe something "modern" and "cool"? I can see it now, a new reality show called We Need a New National Anthem....

I like it and I can visualize what the words stand for, a revolutionary band fighting for their dream. I like it, even if the story behind the song is some fictional account.

Despite what's wrong in America, I am a proud American and can even get emotional singing the song.

Yeah, take it easy Big Erle, lest you want to be scrutinized unmercifully in the future.

Why exactly is it terrible? Because it's militaristic or something right? What would you suggest replace it?

Does anyone remember The Naked Gun?

That part where Leslie Nielsen, posing as the famous tenor Enrico Palazzo, sings the National Anthem makes me laugh so hard that I can't even breathe.

"Who's bright stripes and broad stars"

"Or the ramparts we watched.....................da........da.......da da da da da da"

"Bunch of bombs in the air"

Those are just a few lyrics that I can remember right off hand.

Sorry for the slight detour. Peace

I got the new French National Anthem here :

We'll Take Surrender ( The New French National Anthem)" Parody by Malcolm Higgins

oh yes, we can take surrender,
whenever some guys, try invade
we'll kiss their butts, as we whine so much
it's lonely when you're second grade

oh yes, we can take surrender
the germans, the reds, how bout you?
we're gutless dogs, and non fighting frogs,
now nato doesn't like us too

too real was the feel of blitzkreig
too real, then we'd kneel, cause our spine can't congeal

oh yes, we can take surrender,
don't fly over our precious space
as moammar ducks, lybia sends trucks,
I wonder should we surrender yet again..

too real was the feel of blitzkreig
too real, then we'd kneel, cause our spine can't congeal

oh yes, we can take surrender,
don't fly over our precious space
as moammar ducks, lybia sends trucks,
I wonder should we surrender yet again..

Sing Along guys!!

It's the same with the British Anthem 'God Save The Queen'...

So will you guys have to change your national anthem to "God Save the King" when and if Queen Alizardbirth ever kicks the bucket?

Yes as well as the coins, notes and stamps

Going to cost a lot of money when she croaks it. It would be cheaper to remove the King/Queen from our currency and stamps after QE2 dies than to put Charles/William on it.

French bashing is rather old and that coming from a Brit should tell you something.

Wow subz, it's a lot easier when you put only dead people on your coins and bills like we do in America, they never die again.

Pledge of Allegiance

alias "pledge to the legion"

I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Along with the National Anthem I believe Americans should know the pledge also.

Good point djohnsto77, I guess they could keep these current coins and notes in circulation and just add new ones in gradualy.

I think maybe they should change it to "liberty and justice for all unless the Patriot act says otherwise"
