The DOJ Announcement: www.justice.gov...
Today, Attorney General William P. Barr announced the launch of Operation Legend, a sustained, systematic and coordinated law enforcement initiative across all federal law enforcement agencies working in conjunction with state and local law enforcement officials to fight the sudden surge of violent crime, beginning in Kansas City, MO.
Operation Legend was created as a result of President Trump’s promise to assist America’s cities that are plagued by recent violence.
Operation Legend is named after four-year-old LeGend Taliferro, who was shot and killed while he slept early in the morning of June 29 in Kansas City, the latest in a string violence to plague Kansas City in recent weeks. Kansas City has already reached 100 homicides this year, a 40 percent increase from last year.
“President Trump has made clear: the federal government stands ready and willing to assist any of our state and local law enforcement partners across the nation responding to violent crime.
Operation Legend will combine federal and local resources to combat the disturbing uptick in violence by surging federal agents and other federal assets into cities like Kansas City, a city currently experiencing its worst homicide rate in its history,” said Attorney General Barr.
As part of Operation Legend, Attorney General Barr directed federal agents from the FBI, U.S. Marshal Service, DEA and ATF to surge resources to Kansas City in the coming weeks to help state and local officials fight the surge of violent crime. Department of Justice assets will include over 100 FBI agents, U.S. Marshals, DEA agents, and ATF agents.
In addition, Timothy A. Garrison, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, will be surging additional resources from his office to ensure he is able to handle an anticipated increase in prosecutions.
Lucas said he learned on Twitter Wednesday afternoon that the Department of Justice plans to send federal investigators to Kansas City as support for unsolved homicide and non-fatal shooting investigations.
“As I understand the department’s plan, any outside help will not be used for regular policing or patrol activities—and solely to clear unsolved murders and shootings,” Lucas said in a statement. “I also understand the United States Attorney in Kansas City has been in contact with the family of LeGend Taliferro who support the investigation effort to help find the murderer of 4-year-old LeGend and many other victims tragically killed this year in Kansas City.
Lucas said he hopes to learn more about this effort over the days ahead. “The investigative support effort announced this afternoon can be only one tool out of many, such as mental health treatment and restorative justice, in addressing violent crime,” Lucas said. “As I said in my letter sent last week to Governor Parson that was cited by the White House this afternoon, ‘[W]e will continue to pursue a broad set of social services and other tools to address violent crime now and in the future.’ As mayor, I remain committed to working on all solutions to making our city safer and finding peace for all those impacted by violent crime.”
False.

Hmmmm.... details are sparse, but it looks like the assistance will be of an investigative nature. This is from the Fox link:

Curious that the mayor of St. Louis wasn't informed of the Feds being sent in and had to learn about it on Twitter. I don't even need my tinfoil hat to wonder why the Feds didn't coordinate with the mayor, although there was some communication apparently:

I hope this is good news and the efforts bear fruit.
McEnany said this was in response to a letter sent by Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas to Missouri Governor Mike Parson saying “we are at a crisis point and additional tools are needed for law enforcement and prosecutors to interrupt conspiracies to commit murder and the violent acts, particularly felons using deadly weapons in the streets of Kansas City.
When said, learned on twitter, it was in response to what already was, he probably didn't get the response in time, or out of the office, whatever the case may be, it isn't a reaction of surprise, rather, oh, they're coming.

A horrific shootout outside a funeral home on Chicago's South Side Tuesday night wounded at least 14 people, police said, in the latest chapter of violence gripping the big city.
"All we saw was just bodies laying everywhere," witness Arnita Gerder told WMAQ. "Shot up everywhere, all over. Legs, stomach, back, all over the place. We thought it was a war out here."
A vehicle was traveling on 79th Street when people inside opened fire on funeral attendees, the Chicago Police Department's First Deputy Superintendent Eric Carter said during a news briefing.

"Operation Legend" is coming to Chicago, with 100 to 150 additional Federal Law Enforcement officials assisting the Chicago police department.
The Chicago police chief, and the head of the Chicago police union, WELCOMES what ever assistance the Feds can render.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot does not want any Federal Assistance. Apparently she's OK with 187 children being shot in Chicago so far this year.
