I'm in a munchy mood today. And, yes, this is my second food thread because I want to eat and I can't, not unless I want to pack on way too many pounds.

So the theme of this one is things you ate that you can't eat anymore for one reason or another but that you really miss. I ended up reminiscing about food one my way home from physical therapy about this one.

There was a local donut shop we used to get donuts from when I was a kid. It had this one donut called a Dennis the Menace. What it was was basically a filled Bismark with either chocolate or maple frosting on top and crushed peanuts, but unlike most Bismarcks that are filled with jelly or frosting creme or Bavarian creme, this one was filled with peanut butter.

That donut shop closed down when I was in high school, and I've never had anything like it since. Those things used to be all gooey awesome on several levels.

So what treats did you used to have that you all miss?

Breakfast croissant with Polish sausage, egg, and mild cheddar cheese. Used to get it off a “roach coach” truck years ago....before I had a massive heart attack.

Coincidence? There. Are. NO! Coincidences.

There was this bakery that used to have pink icing cookies.
I also miss the old Christmas hard candies as well.
What I would really like is quilt free snacks that taste good
and don't go to your belly forever.

Agreed on the last bit. No matter what they say, the healthy alternatives just don't taste the same. If the healthy option can't stand up on its own as its own thing, then it's toast (not literal).

There is a local farm produced all-fruit jam I love. It's the healthier alternative to the sugar loaded types, but it doesn't taste the same at all. It is its own product and stands as its own thing. It's the same with natural nut butters. They aren't just like Jif but not. They're a different thing; still good, but different.

I grew up in Naugatuck Connecticut.

I large portion of the town was of Portuguese decent..

So much so that I actually learned to speak it in order to communicate more effectively on the soccer field with teammates.

My best friend was Brazilian, and his mother would teach me a new word or phrase everyday. But I digress..

His sister's all worked at the Portuguese bakery "Rita's"

They made a yellow cake with a pineapple pudding center topped with white icing and fresh fruit.

My Mother would get this cake for me every year on my birthday. And it was delicious.

Well Rita's eventually closed, and we moved to vermont..

My Mother being the sweetest angel you ever met..experimented and experimented until she recreated the recipe and she still makes it for me every year for my birthday.. I'm in my mid/late forties..

I'm not sure if that counts..

Really good Cajun food that I don't have to cook myself!

What people call Cajun food here in Kentucky is NOT Cajun food!

They should be ashamed of themselves!

I've been thinking a lot about this, to see what I have actually missed that I either no longer have access to or can't eat. To the latter, nothing; however, after reading Meathead's post, I was reminded of this corner restaurant in the small town (one traffic light) I grew up, which was named Corrine's. They had the BEST southern biscuits.

My grandfather, when I stayed at their place, would take me up there the next morning on the way to work for a sausage and egg biscuit: homemade biscuits, real eggs, sausage. These biscuits weren't the teeny tiny ones we get nowadays, but huge, like the size of a sandwich. And they were delicious.

...

Years later, there's a Chinese restaurant there.

The other thing I miss is Doritos Salsa Rio chips. Loved them, but they were a fad.

OH! And, and I'm still pissed about this one:

You know how Frito Lay has a contest for people to submit ideas for chip flavors, every year or so? Most of the flavors SUCK, but the one that was the bomb was Wasabi and Ginger kettle cooked. That one was a winner, but has gone to the wind, as delicious as they were. That one should have become permanent.

Luckily, there is a company in the UK called Walkers that produces one that is almost identical in taste, it just costs an arm and a leg, and since I have yet to find it in the US, takes 2-3 weeks to ship.

These are good.

I know what you mean about having a hard time finding regional food in another area.

In Kansas City we have a decent Latino population, so we get some pretty decent Mexican/S. American/etc. regional cuisine if you look around.

I recall vacation in Minnesota where we just wanted some Mexican food, and with evident pride, the locals told us about their Mexican watering hole, and it was soooo not the Mexican we were used to.

When I was in high school there was a donut shop I went to several times a week for lunch. They made these cinnamon rolls that were more like the big suckers you'd get at a fair, the kind that looked like rope wound up in a circle. They were awesome and I've never seen them anywhere else. The shop is long gone though.

Ok I was coming from an innocent place with my response.

I sincerely thought you were making a Chinese food restaurant joke..

Upon re-reading..

I wish I had not responded..

I'm not a prude.. I'm just not crude..

Apologies to the thread...

I wasn't either which is why I was a little cryptic.

Sorry it crept under your radar.

I was just being honest.

I have two others from my grandmothers.

I grandmother used to grow lettuce in the summer, and on hot afternoons, she'd sometimes gather a few of those greens and toss them in a bowl with a bit of vinegar and sprinkle it with some sugar. I don't why, but it was always the best treat. I also don't know why, but I've never been able to replicate it ever after.

My other grandmother made *the* best homemade dill pickles. They were so good that they were sometimes the only thing I told her I needed from her for Christmas (and that was as a kid), so she's give a full half flat of them. I recall when she passed that I carefully rationed those last jars, but they are long gone, never forgotten though.

Sushi.

Most of the places by me are closed and I would typically take clients out for this at least once a week. So many good places all over the country.
