Millions of gallons of milk in tiny pint containers are consumed by school aged children across America every day... Except when schools are closed!

They can't stop milking the cows. Those ladies would protest big time.
They have to milk and dump. Until the demand comes back to normal.

Demand doesn't change just the location they drink at does.

People eating at home don't buy things in bulk like schools and restaurants. A restaurant buys thousands of pounds of potatoes or tomatoes a month. Someone at home buys a 20 pound bag of potatoes and takes several months to finish them depending on family size.

All the stores near me are nearly sold out of milk. I had to buy 2% this week because it was all that was left.

So when you hear places are dumping it because the middle man refuses pick up things don't make sense.

Same with fresh veggies. Barely any selection. Why are they rotting in fields??

I have not encountered any shortages.
So far so good.
I used to go to the market every day.
Now I go twice a week. Wearing masks, in and out as quick as possible, and keeping my distance of course.
The only thing I still can't find is TP. I can get those cheap flimsy paper towels though. (Insert barking dog 🐩here).
But milk, half and half, butter or other dairy products are there for the asking.

There must be something wrong with my brood. We go through ten lbs of potatoes in two weeks.
I'll have my friend Sam tell you how we serve em.

To put milk in bottles require lot less people.

To make cheese you need more people and more milk too.

One gallon of milk makes 1 lb or 2 of cheese.

Just here to pass information; I work in metro Detroit at Costco our cooler for dairy and produce are both receiving far too much product. Running out of room daily to store it; as a result the prices are dropped substantially, so we can sell it before it spoils.... no shortage here or any where in the Midwest chain of Costco. I’ll check other regions when I get to work today.

Since they are not at eating restaurants, they simply are not eating?

Whether the eat at home or out, they consume food. I fully appreciate the diet may change a little. However, if Americans consume X pounds of Y food a year, they do it at home or out with a small deviation.

The difference is the supply chain. What is available in stores has been predicated on what the consumer uses at home not restaurants. Now the restaurants are closed, the demand is elsewhere. Look at the shortages of flour and yeast. The demand for flour and yeast production did not change that much, it just needs to be distributed other places and it is not there yet.

Now, whether stores like Walmart or whatever change supply practices to meet the new demand has yet to be seen. They have a highly tuned profit margin. They may just sit it out as is. Meanwhile products go to waste in the field and the shelves are empty of certain products.

Indiana haven't been hit by the virus like NJ. That's the difference.

Uber Eats has free delivery...and we've been trying different ones...so far, ultra-convient, fast, same price, but don't have to go out

They're still eating, but, on average, people eat more when they eat out than they do at home. I eat two or three decent size meals a day when I'm on the road. When we're off the truck I'll eat at most one small meal for lunch, and one good meal for dinner. I know a number of people that will sit at a restaurant, and eat a big meal, or go to an all you can eat place and eat three or four plates, that hardly eat at home simply because they hate cooking and cleaning. You can't simply say "people eat x amount when restaurants are open, so they eat that amount always".

And my family, when when there were 6 of us eating at home would go through a bag of potatoes every couple months.

So it seems this is due to processing plants not being able to handle large loads of dairy.

At least, milk and other dairy isn't essential. Plenty of other sources of calcium.

Almond and coconut milk have been the same price in my area.

Almond is great and healthy. Plus you don't have to abuse cows to get it!
