There have been lots of 'Sun gods' all through history. A Roman one is noting particularly original.

It might be a mistake to consider some of these religions as practising sun god worship. Many thought the four elements of matter (Earth, Water, Air, Fire) were pure. So recognized the sun, being fire, as an eye of God. Not the embodiment of God, Likewise Hinduism for example has many Gods. But they believe they are only faces of the one God. That encompasses all of reality.

The textual mess of the various Greek papyri and codices that contain the fuller longer textual 'insertion' of Matthew 27: 51-53 (various parts of it are missing in Codex Ephraemi palimpsest and pOxy2082 & pRylands57 etc.) has some biblical scholars shaking their heads with regard to one of the 4 curtains in the 'Hekhal' of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem being 'split in half' or the 'rocks' (of the mount of Olives, according to the Rebbes) being split open from north to south ('from upper to lower') following the Aramaic Targum on Zechariah chapter 14:1-6 ('On the day when YHWH goes out as on the day of battle to fight the Gentiles his feet shall stand up on the Mount of Olives to the East of Yerushalayim; and on that day the Mount of Olives shall be split into two pieces from the upper to the lower half (or 'from north to south') forming a great valley from the east to the west--but YHWH alone knows the fact day or time...'

It is possible to read the Greek translation of the originally Aramaic insertion in 'Matthew' as KAI IDOU TO KATAPETASMA TYOU NAOU ESXISTHE [AP' ANOTHEN] KAI HEWS KATW EIS DUO HE GE ESEISTHE KAI HAI PETRAI ESXISTHHSAV--

('and behold, the Curtain of the Hekhal was torn in half, and there was a large earthquake and rocks of the Mount [of Olives?] were split-apart from the top of the mountain to the bottom (or from 'north to south'?)' when 'tombs were flung open as a result' i.e. before the 'living bodies' of the righteous dead of qol-Yisro'el 'who were asleep' were seen walking around on their feet in the 'Holy City'--

This whole weird marginal;ium insertion seems to echo the language of the Book of Revelation and seems to have ben a very early emendation to the surviving yet mangled Greek texts of 'Matthew' - many of which seem to quote most but not all of it in the various versions in the wild from the 2nd and 3rd centuries ...


Presumably in the mind of the gospel inserter, the 'holy of holies' and the 'curtain' was through to be related to 'olive trees which stand befor the faces of the King of the Whole Universe...' presumably because the two gold-overlaid wooden cherubim (destroyed in 587 BCE by the Babylonians) which had been guarding the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies was made of 'olives wood'--potentialy, 'Iesous' might haven seen 'the Mount of Olives' as a kind of 'Tabernacle not made with hands' = a natural type of garden setting reminiscent of the Pardes or Garden of 'qEden located in the Heavenly 3rd partition ('Pardes' from the Persian loan word for 'garden').

It is also noteworthy that 'Mathew's' citations of proof-text-propehcy from the Hebrew Scriptures are only 30% from the LXX Septuaginta Greek text of 250 BCE--with about 30% of his citations of scripture being more or less in line with a Greek rendering of what Rabbinic Jews and Protestants use to-day, i.e. what much later became the Masoretic text of Leningrad c.960 CE and about 40% are loose translations of the Aramaic Targum Onkelosand Targum Jonathan echoing the later Greek translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls related texts used later by Theodotion and Symmachus.

Either way we have to understand that this passage is a long run-on sentence in Greek which does not match the Greek Style of 'Mathew' very closely--and probably was a piece of very early kerygmatic material used by the early Nazorean yahadim when they came to grapple with Eschatological problem about what to do with 'Iesous' after his so-called 'resurrection' and how that would relate to 'the fate of righteous dead warriors of qol-Yisro'el' buried all over the middle east...

While I agree that the latter part of Mark (16:9-20) is a 'bolt on', I don't really see any style change in this part of Matthew and contextually, there are other references supporting the 'temple veil' reading of this. The specific timing of the tearing of the veil is contentious, due to the sequence of Luke's account, but not that it was the temple veil.

Also, indirectly, there is the passage in the Letter to the Hebrews about how the veil that separates God and man is now torn, which seems to be an explanation of the meaning of this event.

Just to add some more Mithraic references, check out the (alas now quite outdated due to 120 years of later 'refining' research !) the citations found in Franz Cumont's study (The Mysteries of Mithras, trans. 1903) which cites various authors from Antiquity including Heroditus (Book I chapter 131), Ctesios (c. 390 BCE) whose citations are now lost but quoted by Athanaeus of Naucratis (c. 190 CE) in his Deipnosophistoi in Book 10:45 where he also quotes Duris of Samos, and Strabo (Geographica, written in 25 BCEmentions Greece providing horses for the worship of Mithras--and then of course the later writings of Plutarch (c. 95 CE) in his Vita Pompei where he writes 'the Cilician pirates had over 1000 ships and attacked over 400 port cities in the Empire and later perform'd their imported foreign Mysteries on the sacred altars of Apollo, Poseidon, Hera & Zeus not only upon Olympos but also at major cult centers such as Hermeone, Claros, Diduma, Isthmos, Samothrace, Argos, Epidaros, Taenarios & Actium etc. the secret Persian Mysteries of Mithras having been passed down by these pirates to Mithra's Initiates to this very day...'

Suffice it to say the Mysteries of Mithras emerged within the Roman Empire long before Shao'ul of Tarsus was even born...

This cannot be A Midrash or Textual interpretation. The synagogue of James [Jacob] was the very first Nazarene congregation long before either the MSS of Matthew or Paul/Saul came upon the scene. Furthermore the rabbinic authority would not give any recognition as to the Nazarene's Christ either then or now. In that respect the dead were not resurrected back to the terrestrial substance as there is only one resurrection after death in the Nazarene perspective. The dead who were restored in this event were not either in Hell or the paradise of Sheol which plainly shows that to be in either Hell or the paradise of Sheol the soul must face judgment. Luke 16 shows this plainly.

Their are several explanations to this event just as there was an explanation to Luke's account of Lazarus. Lazarus was not resurrected but was restored to his former estate. Being restored is a deep theological concept of being in limbo. The difference of being in limbo and being resurrected is that in resurrection one retains consciousness and being in limbo one does not retain consciousness. The dead of this Zombie Apocalypse [as you describe] were non spiritual terrestrial flesh. Meaning that the terrestrial bodies had no life or spirit. The mind no longer controlled the brain as it does in life.

The dead soul could not have had consciousness in being resurrected from the grave simply because the soul can only die once.
