The Earth has been through many mass extinctions. Mostly before humans existed. It has been happening again and again.
Smaller plagues, famines, floods, fires, tsunamis, earthquakes and other natural disasters also recur, again and again. Add to that war, revolution,
technical disruption, economic collapse and other human caused deprivations and there are many things that can seriously affect society.
It would be foolish to assume that because there are quiet lulls between the disasters, that they cannot recur.
Insurance exists for a reason. Even on national levels, a country that does no forward disaster planning and building up of contingency resources, is
doomed.
They will fail and fall. It has been the downfall of empires for time immemorial.
