Actually, if I'm on the water that's good enough for me. Fishing is the thing. Catching is just a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Actually the tail will always appear to point away from the Sun.

Totally possible to see a tail like this even if it was on a direct collision course with Earth.

Don't panic tho, it's not.

Amen to that, a cold drink and nothing but the sound of silence.

Well, a 40 horse Honda is pretty quiet, but not silent.

Scottish Loch, waders, fly rod, cold beer, silence. My idea of heaven.

There's a place called Loch Awe, took my son there last summer and fished all day, then built a fire and camped out watching the stars while slightly inebriated till the wee small hours.

I was the happiest man on the planet that night.

Can't wait to get back there this summer, going to do two nights this time. It's a truly magical place to go fishing.

Night time a few miles offshore on a new Moon.

It would be great for comet watching. If there were to be a comet.

Amazing photos. Super jealous I need to get a better tripod for my 130mm it's too damn shakey.

At least we can see a tail
that's a good sign it's not coming straight at us

As you may already know (going by your
emoji) but I'll still mention for the benefit of others, a comet's tail is not always behind it -- i.e., the tail is not always pointed away from the direction it is moving. Instead, a comet's tail always points away from the Sun, no matter what direction the comet is moving.

It is possible for a comet's tail to be perpendicular to the direction it is moving, or even pointed in the same direction it is moving. So a comet with a tail next to it as viewed from Earth could still be headed toward Earth.

Having said that, C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is not headed toward Earth.

Now it seems like the comet is fragmenting and getting dimmer. This is happens often with comets.

Same site (14 April) has confirmation that it has already fragmented into at least three pieces (probably more, but the photo shows three glowing chucks) which has dimmed its brightness overall.

The breakup is clearly visible now. This latest image confirms the possible disintegration observed by NEXT on april 5.

Absolutely incredible thread

Thanks for posting, I had no idea you could get shots like this with “relatively cheap” prosumer equipment, for some reason I thought I’d need to build a observatory at the bottom of the garden

I think I’ve found myself a new hobby lol

Great pictures

So I think I read the breakup was expected as Atlas slingshot around the sun

Does this change the trajectory?

The comet was far from the Sun when it began to break up.

The fragments will follow the original orbit.

We gon die.

Hahahahaha! Right?

That was funny.

Actually, he's right, you know what a green comet emits?..... Cyanide gas.
So we're all going to die.... isn't 2020 just wonderful!

Although, we stand a good chance, this comet won't want to come any were near an infected planet.
