It has an atmosphere half the diameter of the sun. Will we not pass through that?

Third, a comet's tail is always directed away from the Sun.

Would you know why this is..

It's not really what you could call an atmosphere, but no. As I said, the comet will not cross the Earth's orbit and, at it closest, it will still be farther from us than the Sun is.

Would you know why this is..
The solar wind "blows" the tail away from the Sun.

So your saying the gasses from its gigantic tail will not even come close to the earth?
You see I'm having trouble finding any details about its exact path within the solar system, I last heard it was near Mars orbit and heading for the sun, I can find the path for ison and halle comet easily enough but not atlas.
Sure seems possible the gasses could hit earth, plus you don't know if it's going to get even bigger (the gasses) as its behahing erratically.
But you seem sure, why when real scientists aren't sure about the comet one bit.

Correction. At closest approach to Earth (May 23), the distance will be 0.781 AU.
72,598,490 miles.

Yes.

Pretty easy.

It's a comet. There is nothing special about it. It is not "erratic." It is not uncommon for comets to brighten, then disappointingly fade away.
I hope it becomes visible to the naked eye. Comets are cool, not scary. Have you ever seen one?

Yes I have seen a comet just looked like a red star with a tail. Not as good as when a meteor passed over me and groups of friends heads when I was about 18, that was truly amazing and was in the papers the next day, we all thought it was aliens at the time lol, one thing does bother me about that but, there was no sonic boom like the Russian one.

The meteor was huge and right above our heads you could hear the whoosh and we were running chasing it and shouting then it dissappeared but there was no sonic boom before hand like in Russia, I did see two flashes (strobes) of light just before it happened but at the time I put that down to me being new to smoking MJ, but that's what made me look up so we seen it early.
That website was excellent btw and it looks from that model that we have no chance of passing through the tail, just need to stick the asteroids path in there to make sure a game of 9 ball doesn't occur and the asteroid goes through the tail and then diverted into earth's path with the toxic gases on board for a heavy landing on Bill Gates lawn.

But in all seriousness, Can we stick the asteroid into tthat model?

If you follow the trajectory it's a forgone conclusion
ELE
What was the actual distance given of its closest approach?

I showed you the zoomed in view. It is far outside the orbit of the Moon.

That big number means nothing to me but it made me laugh at my ignorance to some things haha
But I'm eager to learn, so.. Tell me this, would it be possible for something like star link to create a blind spot in the night sky so any incoming asteroids could be unseen Untill they came through the blind spot and became a visible red fireball. Or is that DUMB

What kind of preparation would you need for something like that? A global pandemic, isolation, police, army in the streets, bunkers prepped, people prepared for the worst, hospitals ready and built quickly.... You seeing what I'm seeing.
Maybe that asteroid is going to be closer than you think.

I've predicted may day 2020 as a mass destruction day many times too, because it was when I first met the animal it was due to MD 20/20
That would be synchronicity mixed with prophecy at its finest. I'm away to research underground cave systems in Ayrshire

Hey, some people cannot handle astronomy, because it relies on hard core mathematics, not foolish notions and speculations.

This current virus blindsided most of us, however in statistics, it was a given.

It is also a given, that some comet or asteroid in our near future, will screw this place up a lot worse than that virus will.

However, when you see the beast, and have a handle on what it can and cannot do , based on mathematics.... like this comet...., then wonder about it's beauty, where it has been, and what it has inside it. Knowing that it cannot harm you is the most important part of being smart enough to enjoy it without all of the unnecessary doom baggage.

Well its not a given, asteroids have wiped out many, many species, many times before but we are approaching a technological level of being able to not only see them coming but stop them impacting.
100 years ago the moon was a mystery, now we have a space race with the richest men in the planet involved..... In 100 years we will be catching asteroids and mining them. And that's a generous estimate, it will be sooner..... Lots of eggs still to be broken though

Well, I broke into the attic and resurrected the old C-8.
Now, it is the 3 days of # weather and clouds that subscribe to the "Bad Comet" philosophy.

I will get a pic in the thread , however it comes out...
