A flight from Europe takes eight to twelve hours not days.
It could come in on a package.

Not all. Apparently the Uk has a form of covid-19 that he's okay with.
Or is is that they are mostly white and speak english?
Why is the UK the exception?

Because they have the ability to quickly impose travel restrictions on countries like Italy that are rampant hotbeds of infection unlike most of the rest of the EU. Oh, and Brexit.

the UK " exception " - seems assanine to me

IF i was a travveler in europe and wanted to circumvent this

for < 100 euro extra - and + 4 to 12 hours

i COULD get a frain // ferry // train connection to london - and board a flight to US destinations there

yes the US authorities could refuse all passengers with none UK passports - but i know personally - 5 people who are leagal residents hear - with passports from various EU nations - that have not travelled abroad recently

so how do you diffrentiate ?

because 2 mates are now just back from germany - with UK passports

Exactly. So how are they justifying that move?

Circuit breaker is being used a lot recently. If it falls enough they'll suspend trading for the day. Does anyone know when that last happened, if ever? 9/11?

I don't see why ANYONE in Europe would want to come to the states during this crisis.

I've been told repeatedly that universal healthcare in Europe is far better than our primitive healthcare so it would only benefit everyone if they went to Europe if they were sick.

Some time around the great depression??
No on 911 they did. That was the last time.
Apparently it was closed for four months in 1914 perhaps to do with the war in europe?

I'd know if I bothered to read the whole article I guess. Lazy this morning.

Better is relative. You guys know I lean left not right, but I think I can share some things about the pro's and con's I have seen firsthand.

I travel quite a bit and 3 years ago was in Ireland for 3 weeks. During that stay one of my employees had a heart issue which required him to go to a hospital in Cork.

The con's that I saw was that this hospital was nuttier than anything that I have ever seen. It was so crowded that down every hall were patients in beds. All of them had different severity of ailments and you went from someone who was in for a sprained ankle to families gathered around someones bed in the hall that was obviously dying and they were saying their goodbyes.

My colleague spent two nights in the hallways listening to various people moan and scream and was even so close to the next bed that as the person next to him thrashed in his bed he was hitting his bed. After two days he was able to get his own room and was discharged about a day after that.

The pro's was that the care he received was very good, and in the end he didn't have to pay a dime. We talked to quite a few people with the company that we were working with they described what we saw as normal. Many people in Ireland choose to go 'private' and pay for it on their own because of some of the issues that we saw.

Because Italy is the real hot spot that is being quarantined with this. The EU has no easy way to shut off its borders because of the Shengen zone, but the UK can.

If the UK doesn't and becomes a hot spot similar to Italy. I expect the UK to be added. If the UK finds its backbone it can lock itself down. There's a reason why it doesn't have rabies and the rest of the world does.

I was due to fly from London to New York in April to attend a conference. It's now been postponed until later in the year, so that means a bunch of hotel cancellations, cancelled flights and no British people trying to get a non-gargantuan meal somewhere near Manhattan (seriously, I almost always order a starter in the USA and just have that - why are your portion sizes so impossibly big?), which will have a small but cumulative impact on the local economy.
Seriously, a lot of conferences are being cancelled.

I’m very serious. It's not a jab at the speech but it seems to me this didn't call for a national presidential announcement.

Serious here too.

I really believe you're on the nail, Zarn.

As soon as the second or third noticeable crisis occured
(like the NBA suspending it ALL until whenever) and somebody
in either Toledo Spain or Ohio beyotchin' about having to use
their school-furnished laptop for actual school instead of FacialBook--

somebody UP THERE also noticed we didn't have any test kits
until the last week of February, and all the klaxons went off.

I really hate the feeling of spitting beer out my sinuses hearing
the reaction time of the federal government. This [created]problem
/[deliberately delayed]reaction/[even WORSE] solution is
getting so old even my wife is waking up to a falsie flagger.

Sorry for the rant, but I needed Mr. Trump to tell me last night we
were in trouble about as much as a Benedictine monk needs a
third nut. House cleaning of the enemies closer is long overdue.

Travel from London isn't being banned, and our portions are so big because all Americans are giant fatty-fats who eat too much.

Our portions are ridiculous, but I think it has to do with the prices charged. People want to feel they are getting their money's worth so the portions get larger.

I always take as an opportunity to feed myself at least two meals at once and look for items that will reheat nicely later on.

Paying $15 or so a meal doesn't feel so bad if you think of it as buying two meals at once.
Eat half now; take the rest home for lunch or dinner tomorrow. Then look for a calorie count that fits in nicely.

The initial announcement was not clear at all. I had to go to the DHS website to get the details. If he is going to announce something like this he needs to be exact. Come on now. Now the DOW is acting up again. Is the point of all this is make the situation worse!?!?

Has to do with 1800's and later immigrants and the overabundance of foods that were normally scare in their home countries.
