Someone was intercepting radio transmissions from the site, recording and reporting. Was US based spying on other US persons. Maybe?

Ok, that's good enough for me. The cover story was to avoid public embarrassment of a screw up over what should have been a routine operation during a time the entire FBI as a whole was under substantial scrutiny and managing reputation damage control.

I know you won't divulge your source but have you spoken with him/her about why the FBI cannot manage cover stories or why they seemingly always spiral? Sure, part of me wonders if that is the intent because that creates more confusion and keeps folks misdirected from the real story so it's not a bad strategy.

After all it was the FBI who established COINTELPRO and this is literally what they do.

I don't support the ELE object theory because there are a lot more observatories than this one that observe the Sun. I think we would have heard other reports from across multiple sources (solar observatories) if this were the case.

Only reason I said that is because Zaph mentioned it wasn't specific to just this observatory. I don't truly believe this scenario.

Agreed. Yes, his comment referencing it not being specific to this observatory also made me think it could be something of the ELE nature but I searched high and low and could not find any stories from other solar observatories supporting this.

It logically makes the most sense. A solar observatory that looks at the Sun all day makes a discovery that has serious potential implications. However, not a peep from anyone else nor similar events (like this) at other solar observatories.

Of course I wonder WHAT the content and context of that information is but alas we shall never know.

Well, if it deals with data or SIGINT, it was probably no such agency. They probably stuck some stuff up there to eavesdrop on someone and somebody at the observatory discovered it, maybe even hacked into it. Maybe they even figured out a way to use it to anonymously connect to the internet. Then the FBI got wind of the whole thing from the kiddie porn angle and raided the place thinking they were busting up a big pedo ring and accidentally wound up stumbling into, and uncovering, some super secret spook program being run by the no such agency boys. That, or the local cops got involved first, then the Fed boys swooped in trying to steal their thunder, and made an even bigger mess out of things. The post office thing was probably an attempt to retrieve some of the illegal stuff downloaded so the potential recipients couldn't figure out where it came from and/or how it was obtained.

That's my .02

ETA - If memory serves me correctly, the observatory was pretty outdated anyway so it was probably a great location to put some clandestine monitoring gear without a lot of people noticing.

The guys that know what was going on spent the night slamming their head into the nearest wall or desk, then laughed their asses off the next few days watching the debacle unfold. The guys that were doing the moving (not the FBI) are usually really good at cover stories. They don't know if this was someone new, or just someone totally screwing the pooch.
