Yes. I seriously doubt the media or government would lie about this.
You asked.
Why would they lie?
Come up with a logical reason why they would lie.
Who benefits? No one.
Serious question, partisanship aside, asking because my brain is currently running around my cranium going "nope, nope, nope. nope" when I attempt to
resolve the answer on my own. How does anyone spend as much time on Abovetopsecret arguing politics as you do ask the question "Why would the media
or government lie?"
The most logical answer to your question, though an answer you will no doubt reject because it represents a Pandora's Box that can never be personally
closed again once YOU open it for yourself, is to truthfully say "They lie because that's what the government does, and the media is controlled by
them, or rather the government and media are controlled by the same powers, so same, it's what the media does."
Assuming you reject those truths, here's something a bit more pragmatic and less destructive of that little bubble of false security found in faith
and belief of highly broken human created institutions...
The government would lie about this because time is by far and away the single most valuable resource on this planet. Greater than gold, greater than
money, greater than stocks, greater than votes, greater than sex, greater than food...
time. As a billionaire on his deathbed how much he'd
pay for just one more healthy day on this planet...
time With any disaster, pandemic, or catastrophe that can be seen coming our way the
government's first response has always been and will always be to downplay it. A calm society is a pliable society. While society remains calm, the
government can plan and prepare. Now, I'd be a damn fool to suggest that those plans and preparations are to we the little people's benefit, because
they rarely are. The government saw the Great Recession coming, as did the media... right up to the point where it could be held back no more, both
regurgitated the "the economy is fundamentally strong!" line of BS. Why? Well, how many millionaires and billionaires in the stock market aren't
worth multiple more now, 12 years later? How many retirement portfolios held by the little guys put those little folks in better shape than they were
in beforehand? Time... the government gave the "important" people time to shuffle their investments, apply safety nets to their own finances, and
prepare for the institutions too big to quietly save so they would be publicly saved in plain view.
So you pragmatic answer is, the government gains time by lying. The media, well it just does what it is told to do. The incestuous relationship
between the government and the megacorporations that own 90% of the allegedly 'free" media in the US means that media doesn't report or say
anything that hasn't been blessed by the political machine. I'm not talking partisan squabbles and BS here, either, I'm talking about a
machine much more powerful than that noise. The machine that makes the partisans fight for it's favor is the machine that rules all and that machine
will tell you it is raining when the sky is sunny and God help you if you contradict what the machine says because enough sheep have fallen under the
machine's spell that you will find yourself attacked from all sides. Sheep have powerful little hooves, you know?
