Hundreds of schools recently experienced outbreak of unknown virus

My kids were out of school for a week at a time each from some nasty virus i got sick over christmas ,and the school was not closed but half the student body was out from middle of November right up to Christmas,the school sent a letter to the effect if a child showed any symtoms cough runny nose fever they were to be kept home, it was a fever virus of some sort and it wasn't just my kids schools i was talking to my friends coworkers it was everywhere, im from Montreal Canada but i had talked to friends in halifax and bc i think something already made the rounds.
