I dont get it either but that long rectangular thing sure looks like a piece of wood? Where in the heck could that have come from?

The reason the shadows are different is likely due to the cropping of several pictures together, thus the pictures would have been taken from slightly different angles.

EDIT: I will grant that the rock has a similar appearance to wood, but in the end there is no logical explanation for it being there, thus I will stick to the simplest solution: It's a rock that looks like wood.

They missed their landing? What did they miss?

I don't think that matters as much as there being lumber on Mars. Why is their a big piece of wood? Are we building log cabins now? The first interplanetary railroad?

Someone please come in and debunk the wood. I'm getting scared.

They should have fitted the rover with a "wood" abrasion tool or a an automatic debunker at least....

Do you seriously think they overlooked some of this plain is sight interesting features while ever internet surfer can spot them ?

Yeah, looks like a piece of wood, but it can't be.

What about the white or silver thing further back?

Zoomed in but can't make it out.

It's trully a sad day when you realize Home Depot made it to Mars before NASA.

I think it's more likely to be stone, just look at the other rectangular (though less exposed and lighter) stone in the same direction. Does look eerie though...and that's the best pic I've seen of this....
