Just out of curiosity, is there any danger that when this corona virus comes into contact with the MERS corona virus they could interact or change each other?

If it's here and circulating then it's not that bad because it's been here about as long as there under that theory.

No.

This is the first real wave now.

As far as the people coming into the US from China, we are still within the two week period, for seeing secondary infections.

You think no one came here from China in October, November and December?

Really?

Of course not.
I am saying that the first confirmed cases from China into the US showed up here less than two weeks ago.
What I am seeing looks like a long incubation period.
And... as far as October is concerned, the story I heard this morning on the radio alluded to the fact that patient zero was sick in October. They didn't say 'October 1st'. It could have been October 31st... I don't know.
If the first person to be infected was sick in October, it would be maybe two weeks before people infected by him or her started to get sick. So in 2 months, there may have been only a few dozen sick.

UPON FURTHER reflection/analysis.....

It is my conclusion that there will NOT BE A GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

China has been extremely aggressive in there attempts to control this outbreak and European countries are in a position to isolate and treat the few outbreaks (only 5 in US) thus preventing spread.

Stay safe everyone.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I work for an internationally recognized healthcare system based in the midwest. Full disclosure I work on the financial/administrations side so medical knowledge is limited. I wasn't here for SARS but was here for Ebola and the activity I'm seeing/hearing about seems to be magnified compared to that. Updates on the employee communications systems regularly, an uptick in simulation meetings (second hand info), and the opening of the High Consequence Infectious Disease Unit.

thanks for sharing this info, definitely seems relevant (particularly considering the industry you work in, the fact that you're in the US, and that your employer is on the international stage).

Please keep up in the loop with any info you can share, or any of that "water cooler talk" that might add to the thread!

Please do not sacrifice me at the stake nor burn me on a medieval pyre, but is it my totally silly and stupid way of perception, or this bloody thing it seems to getting weaker...?

According BNO wich many here took as a very legitimate and credible, today we have, acc recent update:
"There are currently 6,152 confirmed cases worldwide, including 132 fatalities."

However acc some famous table posted here many times we should be reaching tomorrow:

11.100 confirmed and 230 deceased

I really hate numbers when refering to people, i must assume that 100%, but having in mind after almost 2 weeks this wave, after almost 2 months since December, are we really facing a doom and armagedon like some here keeps predicting?
Peace to all...

It seems a lot of us are the same. I stopped posting and visit infrequently because of the politics. But I knew I could count on someone here to post.
There are still some great members here that hold the "old school" part down.

Not sure I understand your point.

I am saying there have been thousands of people come here from there in the time since the first reports in December. If it was actually 'out' earlier, then increase that number of people accordingly.

It is entirely likely that a huge number of people who thought they just had a bad case of the flu - before we started learning about it - actually had this one, but recovered as they do from any other corona virus, because we don't have the same environmental/hygiene issues they have there.

The reason it is so bad there is because of their current poor state of respiratory health, poor hygiene, and abysmal environment with respect to their open air markets where it apparently started.

You explained what I mean. Currently posting by phone, so I am limited. Either it's been out and we've been dealing with it already -- not that bad.

Or --

It's contagious but in close contact, meaning it spreads slowly geographically but quickly in a dense population and we are just seeing our first cases overseas in the students primarily.

Unconfirmed case in...

Since the vast majority of these 'unconfirmed cases' seem to be later confirmed not to be cases, maybe they shouldn't be reported here until they are confirmed?

Just a thought. Posting all these 'unconfirmed' cases just spreads the fear and feeds the hysteria.

Riots are breaking out in China due to Coronavirus

I have seen a few videos of people getting bordered up in their own house, now tensions are breaking out as quarantine measures are getting employed. How long can a city last when it gets shut down? The disease is going to take a toll, has anyone factored in the death toll from the panic?

Do you know when the CDC will be releasing their Wednesday update on how many of the tests they've conducted for suspected U.S. cases are positive or negative? The UK seems to be able to give a daily update, but the CDC only gives us this info 3x a week. BTW, this is my fist post. I've been reading ATS for several years and love the site and all of the great info! a reply to: FamCore
