Well I'll just be lazy and use urbandictionary.

An emotional/psychological reaction caused by something that somehow relates to an upsetting time or happening in someone's life.

Someone buying something for #s and giggles, knowing how many people will develop an irrational hate for said item, is not being triggered.
A post by someone else projecting their own emotional state in responce to that act, is.
Someone else then pointing out this projecting of said emotional state to said previous poster, is not being triggered.
The that person then replying to said previous poster with a faulty use of said word, making a it a broader term in order to justify said previous post, is.

so to is being suckered into buying over priced schlock in an airport.

I travel a lot and mostly international. I almost always buy at the airport from the departure city on my way home. I value my time and don't mind paying a premium for the simplicity of buying where I'm catered to. That is, stores that lay out the local trinkets that I don't have to hunt for. Easy peasy.

Actually Truth, I agree that for purposes of using the word as a weapon, this definition is best suited. So thanks for that.

This narrow definition is most easily used to slander someone else as weak or out of control under certain conditions to stimuli.

Are we to suppose that our OP is a mean and cruel person? I do not suppose this. I suppose that our OP is a normal regular type of person who under normal circumstances wishes to go about their business with as little friction as most of us do. A regular person.

But, due to the current socio-political stresses, where we are pressured to act in an aggressive manner against other citizens because they are easily ''triggered'' suggests to me, that our mild mannered ''regular person'' has also been triggered into acting on impulses not normal to their way of life. That is unless that '' regular person'' is a person who goes about finding fulfillment in tormenting others into being triggered. And buying over priced schlock to do it.

As for not holding to a narrow definition, well I am guilty of this. The word ''triggered'' came to light mostly I recall as a way of understanding PTSD in veterans of war. This has brought focus on how we are shaped by dramatic events in our lives.

But remember how PTSD used to be called ''shell shock" and later ''battle fatigue''? Those too were general definitions that over time were expanded to the present concept of PTSD. And PTSD is expanded as well to the point that now we are finding much broader understanding of how human psychology works and who we are as individuals. I have no problem expanding my understanding of the human condition and not sticking with the narrow views of the past.

But back the that precise definition of ''triggered'' .. It really is really not that precise don't you think? ''Something'' and ''somehow''????
Let's fill in the blanks here huh? Just what is that ''something'' and ''somehow''. As for the rest of it, the '' upsetting time'' or ''happening'', well, if these are not'' upsetting times'' for all of us, then we must be on different pages. The ''upsetting'' is ''happening'' all around us and this includes buying over priced candy to use as a weapon against people we feel are weaker than us.....

Simply put Mr. Graphitti. Thanks. Myself, I am not a traveler. My closest airport is an hour and a half drive and it is small small small. It has only one food concession and one or two suvineer stands. You can drive past the terminal, both departure and baggage claim in less than a minute . When it comes to large airports I feel like I am a captive and am a ''captive consumer''. So I admit that when I am in an airport, I am triggered by what I experience as a truly unusual and stressful situation.

Over the last few years here I've learned that "triggered" means one or any combination of:

Eyeroll
Facepalm
Chuckle

These are also the symptoms of TDS.

There's this hot sauce company in Florida from which I buy my favorite kind - it's called Dino Sauce and it's nothing but pure jalapeno juice. Quite hot. One sauce they offer just knocks me out every time I see it. It's called "Al Gore's I invented Hot Sauce" hot sauce. It's even got his picture on the label.

You'll all remember that it was he who claimed to have invented the internet as well.

Oh, yeah - I failed to mention a couple of their other hot sauces: Obama Trauma, Weapon Of Mouth Destruction, Bern Baby Bern (Bernie Sanders inspired), Socialist Swill and the classic "McCain In My Ass Hot Sauce."
