Seeing some of the responses to your thread regarding veganism, I fealt you were making a sarcastic joke at the end of a great topic as opposed to actually equating the pain experienced by higher life forms to that possibly fealt by plants in a meaningful way. Tons of plant species may prefer fruit consumption for species propogation so having a negative response to predation i.e. feeling pain as we think of it would not be beneficial to the species.

That said,

I find the merits of this discusion are detracted from by arguing the damage of a plant based diet vs others because the main thrust of the op "in my opinion" was plants abilities to communicate and recieve information using ultrasound as well as other possible means. I find this is a far more beneficial topic for discussion. If I'm wrong in my supposition just say so.

In the meantime here is a link to a scholary article regarding lima beans pheromonal response to predation by mites in regards to my last comment to your op.
www.google.com... &sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

I'll keep looking for more details on plant comunication methods and maybe ask my brother for any links he may have to any planned research in this field.

Everything that is living must consume to survive. I am not sure why people have a problem with what is natural to survival. It is simply the way nature works.

Great thread! I was going to leave a video in here, but there are so many that I couldn't choose. I recommend that people look into the research that has been done and what has been discovered. Fascinating!

Some plants also can benefit from static electricity, maybe. I read some interesting things about saw like leaf edges and static discharge!

Told ya in that thread earlier, we live in a simulation....cool huh!

Plants like music.....they're our helpers here, now you tell me they holler out....cool.
Made me a different kind of gardener there. I read in Enoch the Cedars Of Lebanon were protesting to God about the humans getting steel the first time. Said the saw and axe would take them out. God said ok, the axes would have to be made with handles of wood thereby asking permission.

You were correct, it was mostly sarcasm, but at the same time this finding if published in a peer reviewed article shows that plants are more like other creatures than we have believed in the past. They are living and they have a survival mechanism that includes a reaction to danger and damage.

Also correct, but I think both have their place in the discussion as facets of the overall topic.

Thanks for adding to the topic.

Please do if you find something you feel is exceptional.

See, the city forcing me to mow my lawn is like them forcing me to terrorize all the various plant life living in my lawn. My god doesnt desire me to needlessly cause such pain, fear, and stress in another creature sharing his creation. The govt is infringing on my constitutionally protected right of religious freedom.

Imagine the terror you leave for just walking over the lawn, following that thought through.

Fascinating subject, I was blown away when I found out that tomatoes when attacked by beet armyworm they call a parasitic wasp in to kill them. There's a whole lot of communication going on in the plant kingdom.

Sounds very feasible but obviously can't hear one myself, however I have heard a spider scream when I flattened it with a rolled newspaper!

Yeah, Ive been saying this on this site for over a decade...Chandra Bose proved plant consciousness in 1900.

Ive used it in debates with vegans, where it drives them mental wrapping their shallow idealogy around the fact that EVERYTHING is alive.

It drives vegans mental because it's a very bad argument because ultrasonic "stress" sounds aren't the same as a human or animal pain and anxiety.

It's an arguement tat removes the complex nature of animals and humans, equating them to a tree which doesn't have the same organs and systems which are capable of suffering.

As if torturing a dog is the same as pulling the leaves off a plant. It's just a terrible argument.

Exactly this.
Everything is alive yes, but not everything has a central nervous system.

I agree that to over-sillyfication about Vegans loosing their only food source is silly...and here come's the but:

A nervous system is for signalling, plants do not have one, yes. They still have signalling going on inside them and through the root system for managing their internal household. What we define as feeling pain might be the case for plants, too but on a different level. Like immense stress and fighting for survival.

In the end it is nature and I do not feel cruel to say it. Without life there is no suffering. Suffering is part of life.

The thing is, there is no evidence plants suffer in any of the sense that we do. We know the animals do suffer much like humans.

And because there is suffering in life we should just turn the other cheek to human injustices and animal cruelty?

God no, how did you came to that conclusion? That sounds so wrong, what is up with you?

Just in case you were asking a rhetorical question:
No. Learn to read.

Na, that doesnt harm the grass anymore than the wind blowing. Grass is really quite flexible. Walk across your yard and then try to find the footprints afterwards. You probably cant because the grass has quickly sprung back up, intact. Unlike when you decide to cut it down and you cut it blades in half.
Besides, dont you know what sidewalks are for? Cant you read the keep off the grass signs?
The key word was needless. This isnt a pitch to stop eating anything, but maybe just to be a little more respectful of nature. Weather you are talking about the massive wildfires burning through Australia, destruction of the rainforests, or the strong storm that went through you town last night and tore up the trees... a little sympathy for the animal and plant life might be just as warranted as the loss of property and human life. Especially this time of year when millions of little baby christmas trees are sacrificed, quite needlessly, to celebrate your chrstian/pagan holiday.
I stand by what I said, it is against my religious beliefs to excessively mow my lawn. And, according to the constitution, the city cant make me without a danged good justification. My county is a sanctuary for guns... well my home is a sanctuary for grass and all the critters who have made their home with in it.

I was trying to be funny and I can walk over my own lawn as long as I want. No signs forbid me that.

I share your concerns for respecting nature. While I do not claim that I am a saint (not saying you are doing that), I try to do my best to avoid unnecessary packaging and waste. ADD: among other things

Also I thought you were joking, when you wrote it is against your religious believes, to mow the lawn. In the end I took the risk. I knew I would get misunderstood with the central nervous system comment.

Should have not tried to educate you about these facts but I wish you a nice day, anyways.

Lol.. for the most part, I am joking.. but still, for some reason, when I see trees getting wiped out by storms, or needlessly cut down to make room for human expansion, I empathetically feel their pain.. I think there is alot we dont understand about the world we live in and as we learn more about it, we are gonna learn just how wrong our behavior was..
