in fact the "belgian triangle" cliché is not the only one type but there were many types of triangles, some small some very big and so on

there were also rectangles, losanges and squared ships, some rectangle were in fact two triangles flying together

of course the mars weather is severe and the early observations of canals were not so technical but the quote of 1909 is interessing

I've been trying to locate the record of it. But I seem to recall "Birmingham" perhaps? Sometime in the middle of November. Anyway, the .gif I made is actually from two separate photos that I put together. So it wasn't just a one-off. The witness actually got a couple of decent photos before it flitted away. I recall it not being huge, but there were objects in the foreground and you could kind of estimate that it might have been the size of a large car?

I'll keep poking around. Should be in the MUFON database. Maybe I'll sign up.

Another very interesting case mate with similar descriptions from separately located citizens and police - also found reports about the UFO 'hovering directly above the water' pretty intriguing.

Most of my links are dead now but did find this statement relevant as the Americans were 'positively assuring' people it wasn't them.

Yes occasionally they go back waaay before that (most with extremely similar profile descriptions and light configurations) - David Marler has conducted some sterling archival research on this and it looks like there was another wave of 'strikingly similar' Belgian UFO sightings back in July 1972..

They wouldn't build them so they looked similar. One of the truisms about UFOs is that except for lights in the sky, alien craft are pretty much never exactly the same. Even witnesses who see supposedly the same UFO often describe craft completely different, and in ways that can't account for a difference in perspective. See the Stephenville, Texas, sightings. Lots of sightings, none of them the same.
