Some genius
may figure out how to travel in time to the future, but no current technological developments make it likely. Similarly, no
developments in computer science are inching towards an artificially conscious agent. Indeed, if you listen to leading exponents in the field, it is
doubtful that they are anywhere near the creation of strong AI.
But it is simply a category mistake to suppose strong AI = consciousness. When the first steam trains appeared, they were viewed with awe, as if they
were animate, fire breathing monsters. Self-propelled locomotion, until that time, belonged to the category of the living. Likewise, until the advent
of computers, logical thinking was the preserve of humans and other animals.
Thinking does not require consciousness anymore than self-propelled locomotion requires life.
