So today, we noticed we were having problems with the cell phones. People would call, and while it would be ringing still on the callers end, the person receiving the call can answer, but hear nothing. We tried it in the office.
So I jumped on the internet to find out what was going on.
Verizon outage

Apparently, it is even bigger than the map shows, as there are people from all over MI, down in IN, OH, PA, KY and even in NJ having problems.

Texting strangely still works.
I don't know enough to know how this happened, but boy, what a mess.
I wonder if people will get credit for today? Seriously doubt it.

Is it affecting anyone else on ATS?
Verizon says you can get around it, by putting your phone on WI-FI calling?
I'll have to try that I guess.

So, at least on my phone, you have to enter your address to switch to WI-FI Calling? Didn't know that, and will just stick with texting for today I guess.

No problems in southern Illinois at present.

On an Android you have to turn on wifi calling in settings under mobile network.

ETA: I do not have to enter my address. It just turns on.

Funny that, the biggest outages they are having is mobile internet, while mobile network and mobile phones make up the rest.

Massiv e Verizon outage across the US as data, texting and calls fail - and no word about when the issue will be resolved - By Stacy Liberatore For Dailymail.com
22:22 16 Oct 2019, updated 15:42 17 Oct 2019

America’s ‘most reliable’ network has gone down. Verizon appears to be out across the entire US, with the most recent reports coming in from New York City, Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California.

It appears the outage began around 10 AM ET, subsided and then spiked back up again at 3 PM ET –Verizon has yet to make a statement regarding the issue. Downdetector is showing much of the coastal areas experiencing this inconvenience

I’m in Nor Cal valley, and no issues yet.

I live in a part of NY (Rockland County) that borders NJ less than a half mile away.

I noticed some hinkyness earlier today. My phone automatically switched to WiFi when I restarted it. It's still using that setting and the call quality seems to be as good as standard cellular calls.

I'm waiting to see if it will automatically switch back or not. I believe the WiFi calling setting will use 4G if WiFi isn't available. We'll see.

So much for Verizon’s slogan as the nations most reliable network. I love T-mobile. Cheaper and no issues.

Augustus Masonicus recently stated in another thread that Verizon was going tits up.

Looks like he was right.

I doubt Verizon is going "tits up", they have massive contracts

they probably discovered an issue with media normalization and made some changes to their internal networks that may or may not have lead to this issue
