My point wasn’t that he should be punished, but that anyone running a blackmail operation would use something repugnant and illegal as a means of blackmail.

Back in August, 2003, there was a three-day power outage on the whole Eastern Seaboard; it even hit my own city. I will never forget it; especially not how helpful my neighbour, Rick, was.

At 17 years of age, he begged his mom to let him enlist in the Canadian Military; he waited until she was drunk one evening to talk to her, and she gave him her consent in writing.

On the next day, he joined the Army. He voluntarily signed up for Grunt duty. (Who's crazy enough to do that?!)

He privately told me he did it because he was failing high school; quit, and wanted to be a soldier. That's all he had ever wanted.

So, we lost power; the lights went out; the fridges and freezers stopped working, etc.

My daughter's birthday cake was starting to melt the day before her birthday! She was turning 7.

Rick and I were friends. We hit the court and played 21 (Basket Ball) every Saturday afternoon.

He came over with some bags of ice for her cake!

Rick cooked meals for our entire block on his BBQ for three days.

He was only 26 at the time. What an upstanding citizen!

I asked him why he quit the military.

He told me he didn't (I ass-umed it); he got injured on a training exercise; it ended his career. (He fell into a hole on a training exercise and snapped his knee.)

And, even with his snapped knee injury, he could still beat me most of the time on the B-Ball court.

Just reminiscing b/c your service to your Country and the Power being shut off in your neck of the wood reminded me of just how amazing our Armed Forces are for turning out upstanding people like Rick. RIP. (He suffered..........took his own life.......)
