New York City has banned the term "illegal alien" when used "with intent to demean, humiliate or harass a person," the city said.

I've been to NYC, i'm pretty sure 90% of what New Yorker's say are meant to "to demean, humiliate or harass a person"
Are we living in America or what? Define "demean/humiliate/harass"

Do you mean harass like, hey you are not in this country legally so we will need to arrest you, harass?

Under the hypothetical situations a store owner would not be able to tell his employees not to speak their native language (or go back home)
What?

If people wonder why independents are leaning right, this is the exact reason.

Illegal Alien is not demeaning. It's a legal term approved by Congress as the official term for someone here illegally. They voted on it and it was approved.

Nobody will ever be charged with this stupid law. Hell, even profanity in public is not a crime in most states. And what does demeaning actually mean. Demeaning is subjective. Someone could call someone a F]in white punk b#$%^ and nothing. Call that person a dumb illegal alien and bam. Your toast.

Society should decide... Not the government.

If some dude goes around calling people the n bomb... People aren't going to like that guy, and he will be shunned in sorts by society.

But the government deciding what mouth noises are allowed is not a good precedence (unless it's a threat).

Another Democrat controlled city that cares more about non-citizens, than they do US citizens. What will happen if a land lord never makes a threat, but still calls ICE on illegal aliens.

I think they mean harass as in threaten to fine them $250k for using free speech in a constitutional republic.

Democrats: think the way we do, or else...

This is about employers harassing illegals, not citizens.

Of course they totally skirt around the fact that the people this is supposed to protect are breaking the law just by being here.

I did like the line at the end of the story from the mayor,,,make America hate again...
This is to protect people in his city...kind of ironic..

Yet another example of the left controlling, restricting speech.

The Supreme Court should be jumping into this with the first "case".

Just now researching the topic, but this cannot be as the OP is selling it..

A) no derogatory insults are illegal criminally...not the N word... not even really curse words... they are classified under disturbing the peace I believe.

B) 250k is not a real fine , real people get..

A DUI is like 1,500$....

I’m going to actually check into it, but I’m sure there are shinanigans here

Here is the actual crux of the article for anyone actually interested in the story..

“The commission listed hypothetical examples of violations, including:
A hotel prohibiting its housekeepers from speaking another language because it would "offend" guests.
A landlord threatens to call US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement if an Indian immigrant family complains in housing court, after they find mold and cockroaches in their unit.
A store owner tells two people speaking Thai to "speak English" or "go back to your country."
Earlier this month, a New York judge recommended a landlord pay $17,000 after threatening to call immigration authorities on an undocumented tenant. The city's Commission on Human Rights represented the tenant and filed a complaint on her behalf in January 2018, citing the landlord's discrimination against her.
According to the judge's written report, some of the texts the landlord said included "HAVE MY MONEY OR IM CALLING ICES [sic] THAT DAY PERIOD," and "I REPORTED YOU TO IMMIGRATION BOO THEY KNOW IM THE LANDLORD TO PROVIDE THEM KEYS COME DIRECTLY TO YOU."

It only concerns businesses discriminating against employees or customers.

this law is demeaning to every legal citizen of the United States of America.

NY City should be fined that amount each hour until it recnds this policy

New York will continue to drive people out of its city, it's becoming dystopic.

Damn this makes me appreciate Texas that much more.

I thought it was only for employers.
I missed the customer part.

That being said I wonder why this only includes illegals and not political affiliation too?
The mayor must think throwing trump supporters out of restaurants is fine.
We already have laws protecting gays, women, blacks..

I got a solution to this problem. Just dont threaten to call ICE anymore. No threats. Just call them.

Presto.

I've never liked the term 'illegal alien' myself. It is a bit degrading. Also states this when applying for VISA's into the country. I am not a 'alien', I think 'alien' should only be used for other planetary subjects, not 'humans'. 'illegal' can be used if indeed that person is illegal.

Can you say 'illegal immigrant' instead?

That is exactly what is going to happen, until they make calling ICE a crime too!
