Hollywood sucks at doing science fiction. It's like a cheap porn movie without the naked people and sex. Or it's like soap opera dialog and stories in spaceships. Science fiction is just an after thought in Hollywood.

I just watch the Russian series "Better than Us" and it was AWESOME! I just watch the Chinese film, "Shanghai Fortress" which was cool.

I am hopeful we see much better science fiction over the next few years especially coming from outside Hollywood.

Throw in sequels that do nothing but milk an established franchice for every nostalgic dine they can...

They do do something....they taint the original for those who haven't seen it yet imo.

Totally agree.
Hollywood has no clue how to make science fiction anymore.
They cant seem to do sci fi television either.
The first season will be great and then it's like they had no clue where to go now.

Hollywood has chased off most of the really good writers to Netflix/Amazon/HBO. A great many of the best writers are, these days, Brits who never leave the UK. As well, there appear to be a handful of excellent writers in Australia these days.

Hollywood is broken from what I can tell.

Digital media has changed everything along with streaming. People are shooting features with their phones.
The indy world has exploded. Netflix and NBCadvantage have moved their corporate headquarters to Albuquerque.
I work for producers from all over the world coming here to market their films to streaming distributors.

Hollywood used to be the sfx Capital, now its the CGI Capital.

Give me the sfx of 77' "close encounters" over any of the modern CGI crap. Cgi has made hollywood lazy.

Thirty years ago, I might have tried that. Sadly however, I am too old and improperly educated to do something like that.

But thanks for the suggestion.

You are articulate!!! If you can post on ATS you can write and use the celtx software. Most of my themes, plots and colorful characters come directly from ATS threads; wonderful resource for ideas to expand into a screenplay or TV series.

4chan, as well....

Good writers cost a lot of $$$$$, and unfortunately Hollyweird only cares about making bucks...

Actually I have heard creatively is a kinda dice roll, so all the people we think of as greats were SUPER prolific and apparently wrote just horrible stinkers following a masterpiece..

The conclusion this podcast I heard came to was that you can not plan a creative masterpiece.. you kinda have to get lucky.. and the masters just tried sooooo much, they got lucky more than others.

Now a days you have to self publish online and build up a following before anyone will touch you.

Heard an author complaining about the shifting dynamic..

It wasn't stupid but I thought it was slow. The concept of what it might be like to have a few colonies in our Solar System was interesting but not really presented well. The search for ET was the theme of the Sr played by Tommy Lee Jones so it looked good on paper. Well at least family went with me to watch it and that was nice.

Watched this movie last night with high hopes.
Sooo disappointed.
I’ll say something positive first:

The score was excellent.

The actual movie...a complete abortion.
My god what a disaster.

Flinging himself through space with a panel, through Neptune’s debris ring?!?!
What in the 9 hells was the writer thinking with this scene?
Like honestly?

I would love to hear Neil Tyson’s critique of this movie.
My god would he rip it apart.
