The cold was the worst part of being in jail. It was not freezing water cold but it was close enough that you often saw your breath condense in front of you.

Jill was the lucky one. She had “won the lottery” with rueful “congratulations” said aloud. But they all knew that immediate death was easier than being incarcerated on Luna Detention Center.

They were all there for “bad think” against the government. The ones who acted out were dealt with quickly. Nobody even remembers when the system was enacted because the law makers were soon gathered up by their own system.

“Pax moderna.” said the white cloud to no one. Jill felt sad for the entire race back on Earth. A forced peace at the cost of free thought. Everything run by computers. AI scanning the populous for “rebellious tendencies” to enforce a normal upon society to keep violence at bay. Those that died quickly were mass buried while those that won the lottery were sent to the moon to die slowly out of sight under more computer supervision.

“Up” stated the white cloud.

Jill pushed the graphene aerogel panel from the frame where the anchoring bolts had been removed over the past few months.

Jill decided that it was only appropriate to be the first escapee from Luna on Christmas Day. It was a full moon down below.

“Luck be a Lady tonight...” sang the white cloud to a pair of feet ascending into the ceiling.

-End-

Uh, instantaneous death... of course! Erhm... he... uh, “broke his crown”... my supervisor is telling me to say.

Well, anyway, I had this idea Jill, in 1/6th gravity has adventures in the air shafts/ducts. And makes it a spaceship to head back to Earth (Jurassic Park.. detours and escapes).

Then, back on Earth, being unable to take credit for escaping then ending the story as lonely as being “on another planet.”

Sounds like “luck” in the end! A trickster Jinn giving false hope to lead you down the paved path of despair!

PS - How depressing! Like separated lovers climbing the hill of love only to have “Jack” not be faithful...
