MOST robbers do not want to shoot/hurt anyone. Many times the guns aren't even real. It is risky, but there is a better than 50% chance if you call their bluff they will run off.

Personally, I don't think the risk is worth it and any material items or goods can be replaced.

The guy probably was drunk or just at his last straw so didn't give a F anymore. Or he thought he was in "transitional period" like Jules Pulp Fiction moment...
