I wonder what this is about and why the rush, and what research?

Attention, city dwellers! We're interested in identifying university-owned or commercially managed underground urban tunnels & facilities able to host research & experimentation. go.usa.gov... It's short notice... We're asking for responses by Aug. 30 at 5:00 PM ET. The ideal space would be a human-made underground environment spanning several city blocks w/ complex layout & multiple stories, including atriums, tunnels & stairwells.
Spaces that are currently closed off from pedestrians or can be temporarily used for testing are of interest.

I believe it's all part of their new initiative to weaponize C.H.U.D.s.

Building a safe heaven for the upcoming space rock perhaps

Robots.

Tunnels, stairwells, and atriums gave it away.

Underground facilities with those features would provide “real-world” test data, while maintaining the security of being “low visibility”.

Dear God the molemen must have surfaced!!

Here is a fun fact, MIT has a massive tunnel complex under it's campus, it wouldn't surprise me if they answered this request.

Probably tiny networking robots that explore and probably monitor the underground facility. Basically they want to field test something and see how it reacts to a real world environment. Probably sending the little robots in blind and letting them explore, see how long it takes to thoroughly explore it, and how well it does. Borrowing someone else's place is a lot cheaper than building a subterranean lair, and short notice means teams/contractors don't have time to "research" the location ahead of time. If they're doing it relatively openly like this, it probably performs well to date, but they want a bigger, more realistic environment to test.

Or it could just be sensors and no robots. Could be any number of things. The articles are misleading. It just needs to be bid by Friday. 10 day bid should be enough to find what they want. Uni's love federal money. And this is for "research" , so they can pretend the University had a role other than host later if this ever comes to light in a positive manner.

Methinks DARPA is considering moving into the hydroponic weed business.

They have to hide them somewhere while the Storm Area 51 hoopla blows through!

There are about 3-4 subterranean technology darpa challenges at the moment.
Or challenge.gov or something.

Either way subterranean robotics and competitions are and will be a thing. DARPA has a procrastinator.

A cave might be just as much of a grave as anywhere else if that happens dependant on the size of the "space rock".

Under ground would provide shielding from UV as well as much of the RF that we all live with.

This article has a bit more information on it, and it has to do with robots and stuff. So nothing to worry about (fidgets nervously).

"Basement Net" eh?

Not quite the same ring to it as "Sky Net" all the same.

And the sign on the entrance says "WELCOME TO SKYNET"

What else could they be building other than a self aware super computer

because

(of course) they didn't pay attention to life following art.

Tiny insect bot testing. Seeing how well they can map out a compound by sharing data as they crawl around.

DARPA only wants the info on underground spaces in which humans can hunker-down to escape the NWO-Matrix...

two such pop-culture movies include the poor folks forced to evade the Police State by living in the underground while the sheeple and Progressives in concert with the elites lived in the sunshine & parklands of the era

see: Demolition Man (1993) - IMDb www.imdb.com...
Total Recall (2012) - IMDb www.imdb.com...

this subterranean enclaves being raided/locked-down has long been a theme in future living scenarios, both on Earth & on Mars...
the Forbidden Planet had a Ancient Race living underground, but theirs was to escape their Sun going Nova...not to escape the Police State Draconian Policies like our Future-Scapes portend
