The mathematical benefits of drinking.....

So it's just another night, I'm drinking some scotch and soda's, smoking a few cigars and watching through walking dead for the second time(just hit season 3) and I had to laugh at my own ingenuity when integrating my drinking with another task.

I'm moving some data from one server to another, my older server has over 90 percent of it's capacity filled and my newer one has around 50. So I figured i'd take some of my standing around drinking time to migrate some of the larger files(30+ gigs) over.

I was going to keep track in my head, but then I realized an ingenious idea.

I move an empty soda can over into a pile for each file, but...since I was moving/deleting(a few) files faster than I was drinking I was able to double my count rate by implementing an augmented counting solution.

1 empty soda can is 1 file. But to keep up, I lifted the tab of an empty soda can to represent 2 files.

The end result is that I'll hopefully migrate/delete about 1 tb of data from the old server while not having to "rush" my drinking in order to utilize the cans for counting.



Man, do I have (data) problems.

If you think about it your thread shows the technological advancements that come hand in hand with beer.

Final tally was 18 files moved(about 4 of which were deleted).

1st server is now showing capacity out of the red. Around 850GB free.

A decent night. Have time for a few more drinks, one more episode of walking dead and only one person added to my enemies list....

I work in IT (not as a tech but in sales) and I love you nerds that have home server set ups!

I wish I could remember all of the over the top home set ups my technical colleagues have told me about over the years. From full blown networks, server infrastructure and semi-corporate security solutions to restrict their kids internet use!

Please tell me your servers are in a detached garage and you refer to it as your private cloud....

Sorry, all i can tell you is that I'm in the cloud(the liquor cloud). The servers are in a much more pedestrian situation(stuck in a 3rd bedroom).

It's not as glamorous as you hoped....it's mostly porn(and some movies/tv/music).

It's nice gear though......

Look, having home servers is impressive enough but a home cloud would take the cake.

I'm a hoarder, a data hoarder(that's not on TLC yet).

The good news is that you are most likely NOT an alcoholic. An alcoholic would easily and happily speed up the drinking to comply with the soda can policy.
