Studying the Life Histories of Mass Shooters

The study was funded by the National Institute of Justice. It compiles the known information on mass shootings going back to 1966. They state they have have determined four commonalities in the shooters.

1. The vast majority of mass shooters experienced early childhood trauma and exposure to violence at a young age.

2. Practically every mass shooter studied had reached an identifiable crisis point in the weeks or months leading up to the shooting.

3. Most of the shooters had studied the actions of other shooters and sought validation for their motives.

4. The shooters all had the means to carry out their plans.

The study also made a few recommendations.

1. Potential shooting sites can be made less accessible with visible security measures such as metal detectors and police officers. Weapons need to be better controlled.

2. Make it more difficult for potential perpetrators to find validation for their planned actions. Starve perpetrators of the oxygen of publicity.

3. Most mass public shooters are suicidal and their crises are often well known to others before the shooting occurs.

3. Proactive violence prevention starts with initiating conversations about mental health and establishing systems for identifying individuals in crisis, reporting concerns, and reaching out.

4. Those early exposures to violence need addressing when they happen with ready access to social services and high-quality, affordable mental health treatment in the community.

IMHO, this is all good stuff. However, people meeting the criteria are not new. Our social circumstances are not new. Why now? IDK.

Third, most of the shooters had studied the actions of other shooters and sought validation for their motives. People in crisis have always existed. But in the age of 24-hour rolling news and social media, there are scripts to follow that promise notoriety in death. Societal fear and fascination with mass shootings partly drives the motivation to commit them. Hence, as we have seen in the last week, mass shootings tend to come in clusters. They are socially contagious. Perpetrators study other perpetrators and model their acts after previous shootings. Many are radicalized online in their search for validation from others that their will to murder is justified.

i found that an interesting aspect in and could very well be one of the main reasons they are becoming more frequent

I knew due to the sheer volume of mass shootings in Chicago which has been happening for years on a monthly basis. Nothing can be done about it unfortunately. They keep electing the same people in their districts for some reason.

It is interesting to note that many of these shooters have been known to the community to be suicidal or homicidal ahead of the shooting. This is good news, as it means that if we can learn to identify these situations when they occur and have a way of dealing with them, we can start to prevent mass shootings.

These people all killed multiple innocents in 1 sitting, what is being misrepresented exactly?

And when you say misrepresented do you mean like how the 2 killers who are all over the news right now are both being portrayed as inspired by Trump when one was a democrat and the other was a socialist? That kind of misrepresented?

The point is those different balls of wax add up to way, way more than these lone assault rifle style attacks. It's not even close. It's a massive ball of wax. I don't know why people struggle understanding the difference in carnage and refuse to discuss it when they bring up gun violence. It's not even on the radar when it should be a fattest glowing orb on the screen in the discussion.

The one I pointed out only focused on her kids and killed no others. THAT is the defining difference between mass shooters, and family murders. And you damn well know this.

Mass shootings are being considered shooting not necessarily killing four or more people in one sitting. Now if you count mass shooting as the killing of 4 or more innocent people I wonder if we'll see a different picture.

It would be all over the left wing media if there was.....

They need to start public hangings of Chicago shooters, and set an example

All murders are bad but the indiscriminate killing of Innocent people reminds me of suicide bombers and should be treated as such.
