I went back a bit to about 135:14:00 (mission elapsed time) to them doing their checklist for their Trans-Earth injection (TEI) engine burn. This
would be the burn that would take them out of Lunar orbit and put them into a trajectory towards Earth. They did this burn while they were behind the
Moon.
They were in darkness, and since the Moon was in the way of Earth, they were in a communications blackout with mission control. So they were on their
own for getting ready for the TEI burn and the actual burn itself. A burn that will point them towards home.
...So it's a pretty important maneuver to get right, to say the least, and do a thorough checklist prior to it.
Anyway, While listening to them go through their pre-TEI checklist, I had to laugh at an exchange between Mike Collins and Armstrong.
- At 135:14:14 (mission elapsed time), Collins commented that he can see the (lit) horizon of the moon coming at them.
- Armstrong then joked at 135:14:24
"It looks like we're moving forward" meaning the spacecraft is turned in the proper direction, with the
front of it pointed toward the direction they want to go during the TEI burn
- A few seconds later Armstrong then laughed
"It is most important that we are going forward"...."There is only one really bad mistake you can make
out there"
That mistake being that they would be pointing away in the wrong direction when the did the engine burn. They weren't; they were good.
