There's been a lot of talk about what the next US Navy Cruiser will look like. After several stalled attempts to replace the invaluable Ticonderoga Class cruisers, several options were put forward. One concept- based on the LPD hull, was seen as big and slow. The Arleigh Burke class has pretty much maxed out its space and power generation. A completely new hull design would take additional years and considerable funding. Some advocated the tumblehome hull form of the Zumwalt class, but others feared that the platforms instability would be problematic. Well, according to USNI- the Navy may have settled in on a variant of the Zumwalt:

The Zumwalt looks more like a sub than a Cruiser. That would be the ultimate stealth, even if it couldn't submerge very deep.

Interesting. I wonder if the lessons learned are coming to fruition.

Well, one lesson that should have been learned is that when you base your cost estimate on 32 hulls, and only buy three, the cost is gonna creep up a wee bit. The Navy cant needs to have a nice lessons learned doc attached to the requirements. Those Ticos are not going to last forever, and this needs to get done.

Some of those were "new" when I was in circa late 80's. Time to shore up.

It is funny though when you look at other navy's. In their world the cruiser is dead. I think only Russia still has them.

I get it though, our definition is now also included in "space force" so...

Yeah, the Russians still employ Slava class cruisers, I think. The PLAN has a the Type- 055 destroyer which is bigger than a Burke, and smaller than a Zumwalt. She carries two guns and 100 missile tubes. I think the mission is more similar to how we use our Burkes, though.

Zumwalt looks like an old fashioned steam iron wearing a pointy hat with the pointy thing chopped off. LOL

I like it but it sure is ugly. I like it because it's ugly, I guess.

Yeah, she's definitely a sturdy, ship with lots of charm and a great sense of humor.

If you sail on a warship, you'd better love it. Your life depends on it.

a reply to: BrianFlandersAbsolutly correct- she'll protect you, feed you and most will be proud of her. And, Im sure those who crew the Zumwalts and her future cousins will love them. They do take a bit of getting used to in the looks department, though. These things will be absolute beasts- the power generation will be a game changer.
