Yes, Israel intentionally attacked, then said it was "all a big mistake." It was not. We all know that. But as a matter of policy, the US backs Israel. End of story. Any questions?

With the same old, "If you don't support Israel killing people, you must hate Jews" response.
And there are plenty of explanations in this thread alone as to why it occurred, the most likely being an attempted false flag to draw the US into the Six Day War.

I have a few:
Why do we back Israel as a matter of policy? Is it because of the money that pro-Israel lobbies dump into political campaigns? Should our foreign policy be dictated by how much money lobbyist pay politicians?

How come you support a socialist welfare country like Israel? They are the kings of the free # army and welfare entitlement crowd thanks to US tax payers.
In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3.32 million (equivalent to US$23.9 million in 2018) to the U.S. government in compensation for the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3.57 million ($24.4 million in 2018) to the men who had been wounded. In December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million ($18.2 million in 2018) as the final settlement for material damage to Liberty itself plus 13 years of interest.[8]
It was acquired by the United States Navy and converted to an auxiliary technical research ship (AGTR),[9] a cover name for National Security Agency (NSA) "spy ships" carrying out signals intelligence missions.
