A Canadian journalist has had footage restored from that night in 1989. It has been made into a short documentary. Should I say viewer discretion is advised?? A lot of resistance, the students even stopped an APC bay jamming steel fence into its turrets and forcing the crew out by lighting a fire. One soldier surrenders, but is pounced on by the protestors. There are please to leave him be and such. Lots of first time footage for myself. Its looking decent for having been recorded in 1989, at night, during a riot.

That was the result of the CIA trying to mess with Communist China. It did not go down to well for the students.

Much hand wringing was done in the West and MSM played it up like a fiddle.

So many had already forgotten the Kent State shootings from nearly 2 decades previously.

The Hypocrisy was and is outstanding. 'merica!

This is why, despite me not being a republican, I fear what is happening on the left infinitely more than what is transpiring on the right -- at least in the United States. Don't know if you can make the same argument for countries like Brazil or Hungary.

The liberal institutions in the United States, however, have shown that they can keep a right-wing figure with autocratic tendencies in check. We can survive them. It is not a pleasant process, a bit like going to the dentist, but there is still at least a process in place in which it can be done.

However, I argue that the same cannot be said for an autocratic left-wing influence. I just don't see anything in place as a proper balance -- certainly not the modern incarnation of the republican party. Nor the press. And, as we can see from the video above, certainly not the will of the people.

We mustn't let this unconscionable evil take root.

That was surprisingly good clear footage. 30 years later and still a horrible regime to live under.

China minister defends 1989 crackdown

A Secret document suggested the death toll was much higher than later reported, while claiming wounded students were bayoneted as they begged for their lives and the burnt remains of victims were 'hosed down the drains'

At least 10,000 people died in Tiananmen Square massacre, secret British cable from the time alleged

This mantra that nothing happens in the world without the CIA is a lazy way to analyse situations. The fact is that people can - and do - independently form groups against repressive governments. The student movement in China had a complex gestation and the student protesters had legitimate grievances.

The Chinese authority's obsessive scrubbing out of history of the Tiananmen Massacre and their history of crimes against the Chinese, is just what these dictatorships do. Keep the population ignorant and controlled.

No it was not, undoubtedly the CIA and we Brit's would have had a vested interest since we both had asset's and investments in Hong Kong BUT it was the follow up of the fall of communism in Russia and the Educated minority in china mostly in the city's wanted freedom as well, the majority of the Chinese population though still rural at that time knew nothing and it was easy for the Chinese regime to paint the protestors as the bad guy.
Today most Chinese still do not know anything about this major historical event and it has been completely buried by the communist government, it was the night they nearly fell but only just.

Well I see some pretty bad auto-spell errors I can't fix now. Turrets should be tracks and bay as by. Whatever, the footage is what matters.

I sure think it is telling that the Chinese come here seeking freedom to do what they want like us in the US of 'Mericu. People want out of there for their right to not be killed for who they worship too. Fulan Gong, Islam, Christians and anyone else not in the Church of Mao.

I am forever making spelling error's, miss typing D for S etc BUT I was almost tempted to insert a joke about Chinese spy's and technical manual's, ever remember the old PC chip's mother boards for computers, cheap and nasty and there instructions were the worst part of the lot, translated to English by some Chinese guy whom had probably read the original English instruction's and translated them into Chinese before they got translated back again.

The only thing worse than those were Flat Pack furniture instructions - when the pieces in the box did not even match the instructions or the diagram's included, I have one wardrobe with the door on upside down to this day, never had the heart to fix it because I made it - the instructions would have had me put the door on the back of the wardrobe the way they were written.

Sorry off topic I know.

The sad truth is that the night in question was a time of terrible sorrow, I remember Tank Man willing to lay down his life for he beliefs and wonder if he was murdered or if he somehow survived.
I remember watching it on the BBC news over here in England, I was 19 myself at the time and those kid's were only about the same age.

What did the dastardly CIA do? Convince some kids they should be able to think for their own and maybe talk about it?

I'm not a big fan of our foreign policy, or the extent we'll go to to meddle with other countries for our interests... But I fail to see what we or those kids could have done bad enough to warrant the response in that square.

I'm at a loss on how we're supposed to take the blame fore China using it's military against their own people who were speaking.

If you wouldn't mind, can you fill in the class to your point and provide us with some reading material?

While I agree with you, this thread is about China, not the US.

And while we certainly have our problems, I'd rather be here than China.

They allegedly have up to a million Muslims in "re-education" camps right meow.

Thank you for this thread... Back in 1989, I was a whopping 4 years old, so a lot of this info is relatively new to me. Granted, I always knew of an incident at Tiananmen square (like the man who stood before tanks), but I never knew it was a massacre to this extent... To think 10k people murdered in one night, and those details shared are horrible to read. Shooting/Bayoneting everyone dead as they pleaded for their lives, and then driving tanks over them, and then bulldozing remains together where they were burned before washing the remains away with hoses.... just crazy...freaking savages doing that to their own people.

Start protesting facebook and twitter. Google also had plans to develop a censored search engine but haulted after controversy. A CEO refused to deny its role-out in the future.

Protest with $$$. Stop praising and supporting these shark-tank like rich entrepreneurs who would sell out America if it yielded better profits.

Wow, stereotype much? No chip on your shoulder at all.

A lot of us "Muricans" are disgusted with the division here and appalled and sad about how much of the public has taken the bait of our social engineers and has become whipped up about whatever half-truths the media throws at them 24/7. It's incredibly frustrating. Not ALL of us have fallen for it. Too many have, but not all.

What's with the "us Europeans are stupid" comment? I don't know anyone who holds that view. Jeez.
