The actual sequence of events was generally this: when the women complained about his failure to use a condom, under crazy Swedish laws that can be construed as rape. Charges were brought, but the first prosecutor, a woman, dropped the charges for whatever reasons.

Some time after, weeks or months, another prosecutor likely under political pressure from within, resurrected the charges.

In the meantime Assange volunteered to be interviewed by Swedish authorities. They passed.

The charges are bogus.

What about the woman who was asleep when Assange started having sex with her?

Both women have since claimed they were pressurised to bring charges.

But it was more than that wasn't it. Besides, under extradition from the UK it was clear that had the offences been committed in the UK sexual assualts and rape would have been committed.

Edit to add that Sweden's arrest warrant outlined four offences...

1. Unlawful coercion - use of violence
2. Sexual molestation i.e not using a condom when asked to so
3. Sexual molestation again
4. Rape by taking advantage when the person was asleep/in a helpless sate, plus not using a condom.

The extradition process started today at Westminster Magistrates Court , Julian Assange appeared by video link from prison where he said he refused to agree to be extradited to the US.

Assange told the court: "I do not wish to surrender myself for extradition for doing journalism that has won many awards and protected many people."

The case has been adjourned until 30th May.
