Andrei Zhestkov, 27, told authorities that a friend had given him the 2-year-old animal as a gift.

Security personnel at Bali’s Denpasar airport found the orangutan asleep in a rattan basket inside Zhestkov’s suitcase on Friday night, Ketut Catur Marbawa, a Bali conservation agency official, told Agence France-Presse.

The Russian admitted to feeding the animal allergy pills to sedate it, Marbawa said. It’s unclear whether the reptiles in Zhestkov’s luggage had been similarly drugged.

Recently I’ve seen pics of Russians with pet bears, one lady going onto a bus with a pet fox around her shoulders. Like the old fox shawls, but this one was very alive and alert.
They’ve bred foxes to be pets.

They’re also successfully bringing back the Siberian tiger.
They seem to do well with wild animals.

Stories like this are very depressing. The trade in all animals, regardless of their rarity is an affront. If they are not hunted and extinguished for pointless Chinese medicine, traded for nothing to ignorant tourist, or just plainly bulldozed; the natural world is being destroyed.

They found one of trumps long lost relatives.
