Hmm, well with the ANZAC day memorial visit coming up very soon at Gallipoli. I wonder if there may be some changes. Considering this attitude from the Turkish president. The bulk of visitors are Aussies and Kiwis including VIPs paying respect to both sides. bally

Those numbers have been falling recently and i would not blame anyone for cancelling their trip this year after Erdogans comments .

So serving your country goes way back then . Dad got drafted in Korea , navy , but did not go overseas . He was trained as a radio operator but already knew morse from his time sending telegrams in the old PMG days . Coming top in his class he got to choose his ship . His answer was , what the biggest one we got . HMAS Melbourne of course back in the day . He was transferred off after a couple months and spent the rest of his time on minesweepers .

Well that was a dick move by the Turkish president, talk about fanning the flames, I believe he even aired the shooting before his little speech . He will have blood on his hands if locals attack people visiting for Anzac day ...

HMAS Melbourne! Spent over 2 years on that sucker of a carrier. But have fond memories. There is a site on Fake Book regarding those that served on the Melbourne. Gotta laugh at all the adventures me and my shipmates got up to. I guess your father's service was similar. Mine sweepers, great fishing.

We used to have fishing contests off the Melbourne when in Jervis Bay. Mate! You have never seen so many lines come out of the ironwork. Bait was everything from chip bags to chops. Saw some good fish come up, even a turd. The cooks used the finest fish to cook up a feast. Flamin good days mate. Regards to your father, fellow ship mate!

To be honest Hutch man, navy days were fond days.

Serving the country came with my surname which I think I told you over the phone. My uncle said to me at a young age, "Are you going to join the army?" My brothers did but I "jacked" up and joined the RAN at 15. I was the only one to join the RAN out of my family history. The rest were Army/RAAF. The uncle flew Lancasters over Germany. Perfect gentleman.

9th Lighthorse helped capture Bersheeba Wells and took Turk prisoners. (Great Short Movie) It wasn't a Christian V Muslim war. If you think about it, the Ottoman Empire was allied at the time with Christian Countries. Similar to now with the Turkish President. Wanting the popular vote in his country? I think so. The Armenian Massacre is a great read also. To me it has an insight on the Turkish President's mentality. Such old ways need to be forgotten and progress made like the Japanese and Germans with whom we had conflict in the past but are now good friends.

Well, of course this goes all the way back to WW1 and 1914, when the British Empire and the Ottoman Empire were at war.

The Moslems (note I always use the "English" spelling) made a declaration of jihad (holy war) on 14 November 1914 by Sultan Mehmed V and Shaykh al-Islām (primary religious leader) Essad Effendi of the Ottoman Empire against Great Britain and its Allies.

On New Years Day of 1915, a few weeks after declaration, some Afghan Cameleers decided they would start their Holy war, by shooting at 1200 innocent Australians on a train at Broken Hill, killing 4 and wounding 7.....totally innocent people.

Luckily, the terrorist were shot dead by authorities.

This was the first real terrorist threat in Australia.

Even though these Moslems had lived and made a living in Australia for 50 years, they still followed the call and attacked the "Enemy" in the name of Alloha Akbar.

Unfortunately, it seems these Moslems will turn on any infidels, at any time, as soon as the call is made.

I wonder what will transpire in the next few months, considering, there has already been an Incident in Denmark.

I saw that great movie "The Flight of the Phoenix" the other night.......there was the scene where there was trepidation, as some Arab Bedouins, camped over the hill.......in impeccable style, the British Army officer (Played by Aussie Peter Finch) and an Italian, went over the hill to ask for help................Naturally they did not return.
They were discovered with their throats cut the next morning......such is the Reputation of the Arab Moslem, even back in the 60s.

If anybody deserved to be punch drunk after an attack, it is the United States after radical muslims slammed four airplanes full of worthwhile-Americans into the centers of American commerce. THAT is real terrorism.

If that is truly the case, if folks are just resigning to accept this (vs. deploying the police, the military, organizing militias, etc) then you can hardly blame individuals for what comes next.

Erdog was probably behind the shootings. Wouldn't be surprised in the least.

Amazingly enough, nobody seems to want to address the fact that non-Arab countries are being flooded by individuals who have no interest in assimilation - refugees vs. actual genuine immigrants. As soon as every single last Citizen of a particular country is squared away, then we can start worrying about others.
