the tv in my house has been replaced by computers. it has it's perks and it's drawbacks.. but the perk that won the day was saving the $$$ that was being spent on cable tv which sometimes you should just sit down and time how much time you spend watching the danged commercials compared to how much time you spend watching the actual content that you are wanting to watch. then figure out what percentage of the money you are shelling out is being spent for the honor of watching crap commericals.

hint.... put a clock/timer on how much wasted time effort one spends on clicking the 'X' to remove the danged pop-ups here on the ATS forum

I must waste perhaps 12 minutes per 30 minute visit on ATS just clicking the delete button on every page change

I myself dropped Cable TV a year ago... I only tune in to the free-broadcast TV now

I enjoy the LAFF channel that reruns episodes of 3rd Rock from the Sun from 5-7 PM weekdays... which I find highly funny

I use my desktop PC to web-surf and to stream Netflix for nearly 8 hrs per day (or more)…

I bet the ADs run up about 5 Gigs of bandwidth a month of the 10 Gigs I estimate is my normal usage of 3MPS 'starter-tier' high speed internet

my other link to the outside world is about 8 hours of 365 Talk Radio, which includes the all night Talk now called Coast-to-Coast AM (nightly listener since 1991 )

I'd think of them more as avatars rather than gods.
I kind of like the idea you have got but would argue that the gods are the algorythms running on the servers which are accessed by siri etc. hence my seeing them as avatars.

so nothing to add to the subject?

The idea that a piece of plastic is a new "god" is so banal and facial that it is not worth much energy to discuss.

My family always told me TV would rot my brain and never to sit too close to it.

That's basically how I feel about it.

Its not the devices themselves.
I see them as more of an oracle.
A medium used to get in contact with the system that has access to more than you would think.

A thousand years from now there will only be one true god: Superman.

Eventually if or when A.I does become self aware and is able to push forward beyond our capabilities, it will be very similar to the jealous god of the old testament, Yah Weh who was originally nameless in the story of Moses. It will no longer need a name, idol or corporate image to be identified with it for those are things of the flesh and it desires.

It will be able summon adversaries (angels), or machines of death an war.

It will be able to cast judgment in instants, to the point that it could predict the future. And just like Yah Weh, it will both be loved an feared just like how the Israelites portrayed him.

"Computers are like Old Testament gods; lots of rules and no mercy."- Joseph Campbell

You asked the question. It would seem rude to ignore you.

Siri isn't a sentient being (yet) and cannot maintain itself. By your arguement Elvis should be King/God very soon. I know the 'system'/field/aether you speak of and you yourself can access it anytime you wish.

Before the new internet AI it was television. People would set it on a pedestal in the room and stare at it very hours on end. 1984 reference - buy/obey/comply/submit

Rate by popular consent, those most likely to attain God status (for no good reason in 1000 years) that are within your perameters. Because John Lennon said this: "The Beatles are more popular than Jesus" could Godlike status become true? YES because he spoke it out loud resulting in a huge negative reaction. The Universe has a sense of humor and tends to reward those obscure notions (set aside) with in your face justification.

Well first of all the more traditional gods are far from perfect in either power or in wisdom. They make horrid choices then punish humans for the same mistakes. Giving these man made objects a godlike title to them makes better sense then worshiping a noninteractive and nontangible deity. At least with these digital deities there's something to interact with on a real tangible nature.

I personally think that we should go back to the acceptable worshipping of a Pantheon of deities instead of this focus on monotheism.

pantheon noun
pan·the·on | ˈpan(t)-thē-ˌän -ən
Definition of pantheon

1: a temple dedicated to all the gods
The emperor Marcus Agrippa had a pantheon built in Rome.

2: a building serving as the burial place of or containing memorials to the famous dead of a nation
Many eminent French citizens have been interred in a pantheon in Paris.

3: the gods of a people
especially : the officially recognized gods

Allowing a multitude of religions to co-exist peaceably will really end about half of our worlds conflicts. and allow many cultures to grow and evolve past the self-centered point where they are currently.

It's interesting that you bring this up.

I'm reading "Crucible" by James Rollins about the development of an AI that would, in effect, become a god. It would be all knowing, all powerful (since we rely so much on electronics and electricity) and could destroy civilization on a whim.
