Deepmind's AlphaStar AI hammers StarCraft II pros in world first

Much like chess and Go before it, the last great bastion of human strategic dominance and superiority, StarCraft, has been conquered by artificial intelligence, in a disturbing breakthrough

StarCraft is a real-time strategy (RTS) game which involves three distinct races (Terran, Protoss and Zerg) mining resources, building up armies and employing devious and complex strategies, often involving thousands of steps, to overcome the opponent.

In StarCraft, roughly 300 basic in-game interactions can yield millions and millions of possible permutations which must be calculated and adapted on an ongoing basis.

In a new win for AI, Deepmind's Alphastar AI has successfully learned how to defeat professional Starcraft 2 players. Individual AI "players" racked up about 200 years worth of in-game play time across thousands of games. Starcraft 2 is an incredibly complex real-time strategy game in which you build up an army of various units and functions and use your forces to defeat the enemy player.

It still loses to Blizzards insane difficulty A.I. most of the time. Which is disturbing as well.

Well no wonder it beat me all the time! Hate cheaters.

On the flip side a really smart A.i. would cheat too win just like a human.
But blizzards A.I isnt real A.I just a tricky programme told to play Starcraft. This thing learned to play Starcraft.

I'm not knocking SC but it less strategy and more apm/aps.

I'd like to see how the ML bot fairs against high level total war (shogun 2 etc..) players where it's less apm and more strategy.

Make it play hero’s of might and magic 3.

Insane difficulty literally responds to your in fame moves though, ie. Can see stuff that hasn't been scouted, knows your build order etc.

Whoch pros did it play against?


Innovation would get pwned but I can't see it taking on Has, even though Innovation would cream Has.

The primary stream was a best of 5 against LiquidTLO

Was a fun, surreal time actually watching that from campus.

Not sure but I would bet money one of their last names is Kim. :|

These matches don't count until the AI plays the best players in the world... Serral or Maru. The two guys that faced the AI, TLO and Mana are top tier players, but not even top 25 in the world.

Well... so much for humanity!
