From experience most humans are like your friend OP. Liberal or not.
Majority of people cherry pick and only want to see things in a way that suits them.
Very few are okay with having a calm discussion about things they disagree with.

Doesn't matter the nationality, political leanings, skin colour, sexuality, gender etc.

Mankind for me comes down to two kinds of people. Humans and stupid humans.

I spend a lot of my time laughing at how much pot to the kettle goes on in the world. How many people are mirrors of each other despite their self appointed differing labels.
Laughing how often I see people accusing others of the EXACT SAME thing they themselves are doing.

Such a shame we cannot choose our friends.....
