of course radio ruined one of the best lines of the song by changing

"whistling tunes, we piss on the goons in the jungle"

to

"whistling tunes, we're kissing baboons in the jungle"

that should be unacceptable. how many people probably dont get the song and that change does not help

"if looks could kill they probably will"

its fantastic

I think it's about the TV game "Jeux sans frontiers", hence the lyrics.

The British version was called "It's a knockout".

Can you post something for your olympics link please.

its not about that either

inspired by

en.wikipedia.org...(song)

The song's lyrics are interpreted as a commentary on war and international diplomacy being like children's games

The song's title refers to Jeux Sans Frontières, a long-running TV show broadcast in several European countries, in which teams of residents representing a town or city in one of the participating countries would compete in games of skill while frequently dressed in bizarre costumes. While some games were simple races, others allowed one team to obstruct another. The British version was titled It's a Knockout, which Gabriel mentions in the lyrics.

The video includes film clips of Olympic events and scenes from the 1951 educational film Duck and Cover, which used a cartoon turtle to instruct US school children on what to do in case of nuclear attack. Such forlorn imagery tends to reinforce the song's antiwar theme

Yea, I loved this song and Peter Gabriel is part of Genesis with Phil Collins.
" In games without frontiers war without tears."

And to me "Sledge Hammer" was awesome. "Big Time" too.

Thanks TST for the good diversion.

Yeah, Gabriel is an early art rock god.

Many older white guys got as close to funky as they'll ever get via ol' Pete. I like his early stuff, before he had to pay for his kid's college and sell out to top 40 crapola.

Security is a nice low light, intoxicated album... and one might even dance in their tighty whities to some tracks...

I have the touch - PG

its bothering me still that you think it is about the olympics.

Peter in the beginning of the video

"this song is about nationalism. especially the sort of nationalism that allows one country to forget totally the rights of another country. this is specifically dedicated to the 43k unnecessary victims of the totally unnecessary war in Nicaragua"

Love Peter Gabriel's work.

but my fave song from him is Red Rain:

Lyrics
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
I am standing up at the water's edge in my dream
I cannot make a single sound as you scream
It can't be that cold, the ground is still warm to touch
We touch, this place is so quiet, sensing that storm
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
Well I've seen them buried in a sheltered place in this town
They tell you that this rain can sting, and look down
There is no blood around, see no sign of pain
Hay ay ay no pain
Seeing no red at all, see no rain
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
Red rain
Ohhhh
Putting the pressure on much harder now
To return again and again
Just let the red rain splash you
Let the rain fall on your skin
I come to you defenses down
With the trust of a child
Red rain is coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
Pouring down all over me
And I can't watch any more
No more denial
It's so hard to lay down in all of this
Red rain coming down
Red rain
Red rain is pouring down
I'm bathing in
Red rain coming down
Red rain is falling down
Red rain is coming down all over me
I'm begging you
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Red rain coming down
Over me in the red red sea
Over me
Over me
Red rain
