What gets me about these self drive cars is what happens when a UFO buzzes the occupants? At this present time we can take measures to escape the UFO by flooring the peddle. Will the car manufacurers put something into the software to cope with a UFO fly by / buzz?

Self driving cars will never completely replace driving. Areas that are not well mapped, construction areas, pot holes, dirt roads, driving in snow, if it happens will be a disaster.

I see self driving cars and trucks on carefully selected roads only like major highways. Mostly well mapped urban areas. I think they will have mostly commercial applications not ordinary driving.

I was talking about car accidents. Come to think of it, there weren't too many head on collisions when we had horses. We need to make the car smart as a horse. Give it some horse sense.

I'm not saying self driving cars won't be a reality. I'm saying they will be limited to a selected network of roads. Maybe it will be a useful cruise control for regular drivers but not everyone wants them to replace normal cars. People love to drive their cars. Look at all the performance cars. If people wanted everything automated, we wouldn't have standard shifts anymore.

so I always wonder how the lane assist steering, or in this case full auto steering works when all lanes and lines/markers are covered by 6 inches of snow?
As far as drunk driving, representative Debbie Dingle wrote a bill mandating breathalyzers in every new vehicle. Imagine blowing just to start your car. Though you could probably get your kid to do it for you.

yes technically that's right but do we really think that all those city councils and state are going to be happy to have, what is for many of them, their second biggest income stream eliminated overnight?

I don't think so. I'm inclined to think driver-less cars will, as a result of pressure by councils and others including states, will soon have some capacity for over manual driving.

There will come a day when you will not be allowed to drive a vehicle on public roads. It will be considered a hazard.
It will produce a lot of race car and racing motorcycle drivers, and racing will be the number one pastime.

They will buy up chunks of rural America and have a "closed course" on their property, and drive old LTDs and Monte Carlos. They'll have whole villages with a blue beam jammer that prevents gps/internet access, and where no technology post 1985 is permitted.

Normals will go there to "get away for the weekend," and will buy folk arts and crafts, antiques, and non-gmo food that was never touched by robots.
