The best thing about self driving cars... No more drunk drivers

I personally can't wait for self driving cars.
I am totally ready.

I love driving, but I can't even imagine how many lives will be saved from this.
If all cars are self driving I bet the accident rate will drop significantly. No more drunk drivers!!
Not saying there will never be accidents, but human
error will be taken out.

Imagine getting from Milwaukee to Chicago in 30 minutes or anywhere else, two, three four times as fast?
Suppose you want to go on a cross country trip. You could put a bed in your car and go to sleep and have your car take you overnight.

In national disasters I imagine that self driving cars could get people to safety much much faster. No more gridlock.

I know there are a lot of negatives that people can't seem to get over, but there are too many positives to list.
Maybe we could even get rid of auto insurance!!!

What you and others forget is that once they can mandate self-driving cars, they'll use that to proscribe where and how you can travel. From what I read, the idea is to link the cities by rail and ultimately they will take out the Interstate highway system so driving from Chicago to Nevada will no longer be an option.

If you love flying, you will be a happy camper because the trains will be as fully uncomfortable as flying or riding the present day Grayhound bus lines. Yuck!

I completely agree. Human driving seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Any time you're on the road there are likely several people in cars around you with IQs far below average (just basic stats). The kind of people who don't understand that weather affects stopping distance, traction, etc. It's why every storm produces a lot more accidents than on clear days. And why we can't get through one single day of commuting in any large city without accidents. I'll take computer errors rates over them always.

Everthing is online now and everything is delivered to the door. So I assume trucks more likely to go automated before personal cars.

I love to drive and ride motorcycles. Nothing is more relaxing and calming to me than a road trip.

However, if we can get 75% of drivers off the road, it would be a good thing from a safety standpoint. Far too many people don't take driving serious and have little to no situational awareness (or common sense).

I think it is way too easy to get driver's licenses in the US.

We are a long ways off from truly autonomous cars. Driving is far too complex and unpredictable. However, I do think the active cruise control systems and the like are wonderful and will allow from some significant improvement.

Yay! A half hour extra sleep in the morning on the way to work, and a couple stiff drinks on the way home!

If that car is under the control of a drunk person in any way, including going from party to bar, they will figure a way of still giving a drunk driving ticket. You can get a drunk driving ticket just sitting in a car if you have keys for the car on you here in Michigan. The cops will stop by someone's house and tell them to move their car and when that person moves it off the street into the drive, they can get a drunk driving. I know that, a friend of mine got busted for moving his car at the request of an officer....at my own house. We wondered where he went, his car was in the drive, the next morning we got a call to bail him out. He tried to fight the ticket by saying it was entrapment, but the police just said he did not have to move the car, if it was illegally parked on the street at night during a parking winter snow removal parking ban. He blew a 1.1 and the courts gave him an impaired as a plea bargain.

I like the idea until it's forced and drivers who choose to drive are taxed into oblivion.

I'm so torn on this. I agree so many drivers are distracted and it would be better if they were off the road. Also, it would be nice to nap and travel. However, I am having issues trusting a car with my life. I'm sure I'd get over it, but right now it isn't something I'm jumping to have.

Great. Even MORE people on earth. And NO funny videos.

Police and courts will definitely need a new revenue stream when self driving cars take off. No more DUI money, no more speeding tickets, and hopefully an end to roadblocks.

Lol... I think you mean 0.11... doubt he'd still be alive if he was 1.1, let alone capable of moving his car.

Don't underestimate the stupidity of gov'ts .

They will likely put a breathalyzer on the self driving car to prevent drunk drivers from getting a ride , due to liability . So drunks will continue driving non self driving cars when drunk.

Come on, K.I.T.T. could drive on it’s own and David Hasselhoff was a big singing sensation in Germany.

Besides if you want flying cars you have to get used to cars driving themselves. No way the FAA lets you fly one yourself.

I wonder if you can put your kids in it and have it take them to school and pick them up?

They can't figure out how to maintain a stable cell signal when you walk across a room, yet we're somehow, magically going to have self driving cars that are in constant communication with GPS satellites and 4G networks within the next decade? BULLSNIP! I'll keep my truck with a steering wheel and pedals, thank you very much. I think this autonomous vehicle idea is about as intelligent and well thought out as using fiberglass for toilet paper. This is the type of nonsense that creates technophobes.

I want flying cars, but only because I hate traffic.

I don't trust robots, AI's.
