Debt does not make people slaves, unless it's akin to debt bondage/bonded labour, which is still practised in some crap-hole parts of the world. If
you take out a mortgage, or a loan, then you do that voluntarily and it is a business arrangement. In the context of the OP slavery is employment.
The biblical proverbs about the borrower being a slave et al, is just that - a proverb. In biblical times this probably was akin to bonded labour as
the ultimate collateral was the borrower.
