"Bill would make smoking on Florida beaches illegal"

I really really hate cigarette smoke and do just about everything to avoid it, but is this reaching? I know these things can be
a very slippery slope. Cigarettes today, french fries or soda tomorrow...
I guess they passed something similar in New Jersey already.

For those that think this is just about smoke, it isn't, it's about litter and pollution. Having lived in Florida it was always
devastating to go to the beach after spring break. The amount of trash left behind was sickening, but to be fair it wasn't just
cigarettes.

If you've ever been to a beach littered with cigarette butts you'd back this legislation. Recently went to a beach and it was disgusting how many cigarette butts were in the sand.

The libertarian in me doesn't really have a problem with smoking. However, smokers don't do themselves any favors when they are constantly littering and smoking in places that inconvenience others. Cigarette smoke stinks and the litter. If more smokers were more considerate I don't think there would be such a push to stop them from smoking in a lot of places.

You are on fire today with your threads!

I don't like cigarette smoke blowing in my face or anyone's kids' faces, but yes, people should be allowed to smoke on public beaches. It's open air, and if a person is bothered, they can politely ask the smoker to move, or they themselves can move.

The bill will probably pass though. It won't be long before it will be illegal to smoke on any beach in America.

No, they shouldn't. Public parks and even bus stops have made the list here in Michigan.

As well....no smoking with kids in your car has been starting to be enforced.

Job applications are now being rejected if you are a smoker as well, and that question has begun to be included in interviews.

I'm not a smoker myself.

Littering is already illegal & it doesn't stop people from littering the beach. I'd imagine this law will not stop people from smoking on the beach either.

This must be an onion piece.

Florida would never pass something that cleaned up their state or promoted a good image.

You are quite right. Lifeguards have already said they won't police it. The fine is very little too, so for some the smoke will be worth the fine!

I sure hope you don't wear perfume or smelly sunscreen. Both give me tremendous migraines. If i was at the beach and someone smelly like that came and sat next to me, I would simply move. If i don't like what someone is doing I remove myself from their proximity, I don't ask them to change their behavior. I think cigarettes butt on the beach are minor compared to other litter. For all you know those butts could have washed up on the beach as well.

The answer to that problem would be to fine people who are seen throwing buts anywhere but the trash, not taking away people's freedom to smoke if they want to.

I hate smoke, but it is out in the open air, so I can't see how you could ban it, however, smokers do need to take their butts with them. It is gross to be on a beach, or anywhere, where there are fag end all over the place. Maybe there needs to be designated smoking zones with proper bins for the butts, that way it keeps the smoke and mess contained and avoidable.

They banned it on some beaches back in OZ a few years ago, more so the cigarette buts are a really bad pollutant. Also it stinks. People howled for about 30 seconds, then they got use to it and enjoy cleaner beaches I guess. Don't hear a peep about it anymore.

yes. outdoors, in the open air, cigarette smoke dissipates immediately. i'm infinitely more concerned that we all have to breathe LETHALLY toxic motor exhaust gases (ie - fumes that WILL kill you in a very short time, if inhaled directly; a la the 'hosepipe from exhaust' suicide method) from the millions of vehicles on the road. but the car is god. mustn't castigate the car. easier to demonize smokers, and i'm tired of it.

There are laws that make you pick up your dog's poop and fines in place if you don't. So, we always see folks with little blue bags scooping up their pet's drops. Smokers should be allowed to smoke outdoors, but they should be fined for leaving their "droppings". Generally, I notice that people who smoke toss their butts on the ground automatically, seemingly without even thinking about it. That needs to stop. Somebody should invent 'butt bags'.
