Snowflakes drift, gently
Lilting through the crisp thin air
The sight seems suddenly
Terrifying as im gripped with fright
From whence I know not.
Only that it seems I can hear
Screams, frozen, which seem as if to shatter
The fragile web of peace which lays
A thin skein of ice over the horizon
A steady murmer of discontent
Stifled by the idle weight of snow.
My feet fall with muffled cracks
As I sift through time with thought
Searching, as if by careful eyes I might find
The memory of that which was wrought
So clearly filled with violence, here.
But if blood here once lay, then tis no more;
Else its agony I would've felt, surely as my own.
Alas! My senses have pulled a terrible trick
Else my mind itself has duped;
For it was my own demise I read
So clearly in this wintry land.
A crack resounds; a wet thump of my chest.
Blood, at once, to gush
Out staining this place with my life.
Yet I feel no bitterness; my heart is clear of strife
