Fair point.

The only thing I'd point out is that division wasn't their choice, but rather external.

You could make the argument outside forces caused the split-up of Korea too.

The Japanese MoD released their final position on the incident after talks were called off.

Honestly in a conflict behind Japan and South Korea I think we would support whoever had the advantage after the first shots of the war, which I think in the end would be Japan. Another factor that would weigh into Japan’s side is the fact that there are more US service members in Japan than S. Korea (24k vs 50k approx.).
