Strange blue light in sky over Queens, NY

Dunno what is going on. Could be some explosion of some sort or military testing? Lots of videos just gone up all over Queens, Manhattan etc. Bright blue light in the sky and no one knows up front what's going on...

Blue Light Floods NYC Sky as Transformer Explodes in Queens

A transformer explosion in Queens sent an eerie blue light flooding into the nighttime sky over New York City Thursday night, startling residents.

Con Edison says a couple of transformers tripped offline at the substation at 20th Avenue and 32nd Street, sparking a fire.

The explosion lit up the sky so brightly in neighborhoods like Astoria and Queens that it briefly appeared to be daytime, residents reported. Smoke arose from the source of the blue light, visible from as far as Manhattan.

The official response is that multiple transformers failed and exploded.

I saw it out my window here in Manhattan.

For about 5-10 minutes none of us knew what was going on and the damn thing lit up the sky as bright as day.

A lot of people probably reached for their anti anxiety meds tonight.

Glad to hear no one was hurt.

In the land of cell phones and social media, I find it hard to believe the only available videos are from a sizeable distance.

Does it matter? Everyone knows that when you share videos to those south of the equator, they are upside down!

Transformer failure... sure looked exciting for those within visual range...

I have no idea why I didn't grab my phone. That was odd for me because I've responded to so many emergencies I'm usually not surprised or caught off guard by anything.

This was just so absolutely bizarre that I was just looking out the window back and forth to see how far it went.

I could see that it was definitely coming from East of Manhattan so Queens/LIC was definitely first on my mind but when I opened the window I didn't hear any noise so I was confused.

The last time we had a power plant blow like that was during Sandy and I had no power for 5 days. I heard that though. These flashes didn't seem to be accompanied by sound (or maybe I was too far). Supposedly it was seen as far as lower Westchester.

Similar thing happened in Louisiana yesterday. Is someone trying to take the grid down? Hmm just seems strange. Both were HUGE and went on for a long while.
