This question plagues me. You turn on the radio and you find in my opinion prosessed crap. anything that does not fit into that radio friendly formula is swept under the rug...in order to find quality music out there(and it is out there) you have to really search it out. Great musicians cant find record deals...and great albums generate no sales which unfortunately usually results in great acts being dropped from their record labels and it makes me sick.

Really Utopia.....what do you consider good music? personally, I think you're right. The "popular" stations play stuff that mostly sounds alike. Then don't get me started with rap and hip hop....arggh :shk:

When I listen to the radio, I find myself listening to oldies, easy listening and just about anything other than "popular" music. Except I can't stand country music....

Utopia...are you a frustrated musician yourself??

Oh, I'm totally with you, I was just curious to what you like. Incidentally most of the bands you listed find their way onto my playlists, with some exceptions. Just click on the little "Now Playing" banner in my sig to see what I listen to. There is alot that hasn't made it to that list yet though, I have only been a member on that site for a week or two.

Mainstream radio and MTV just plain sucks. They have a bunch of pretty faces singing crappy songs that they didn't even write. Of course there are some stations that keep it real, and even MTV finds an acorn every now and then, but most generaly it's all crap. I hate pop music, no talent (by pop I mean the teenie bopper crap like Britney and BsB and 98° ad all that shyte).

I rarely listen to the radio, it either sucks or I've heard it a million times already. The one time I have been to Hawaii, though, I couldn't get enough. But, I bet if you live there, it gets old, too. What I do is just switch genres. Right now i'm getting into the Grateful Dead, blue grass, and reggae to name a few. This is a nice change from the heavy metal, classic rock, oldies, and some electronic I used to listen to. Maybe your tastes have evolved to recognize crap when you hear it on the radio.

yeah unfortunately people usually just settle for whats easily accessably...which is mostly crap. The way it stands now u have to search out the quality music, which i guess is just too much for most people

If you're in the UK, Kerrang Radio play some good tunes - often championing cool new bands of all rock based genres. 105.3FM (i think). www.kerrangradio.co.uk
Radio 1 has upped its game recently too. A year or so ago, it was utter cack, but now they play some decent music, especially from new bands on the Zane Lowe show in the evenings.

Of course it is all relative, but I would be bold enough to say that 99.99999999999999% of the music to come out of the US is a waste of one's ear drums.

My question is: How can you call it alternative if it is the mainstream? Alternative to what?

well put!!! The answer to your question is you cant call it alternative...its not! Its part of the marketing that everyone(for the most part) buys into....if you call it crap people wont listen but call it alternative and they will....but crap by any other name....you get my point. True alternative music does not fit into the mold therefore for the most part is not even played on the radio.

I suppose that you are correct. It just bothers me that the usage meaning is contraditory to the definition meaning. As if the title of Alternative automaticly attributes individuality and a rebelious nature to the bands suggested.

I've been saying that since like '95.:lol Talk about mislabled music.

Where has good music gone?
This is something we say when we get old
.
The older I get the more music sucks
I despise the radio. I find I am digging outside of mainstream to find music I like.
Lately I've been listening to Del tha Homosapien, Tool, and The Chemical Brothers. Next month I'm sure I will be listening to something different. The only radio I listen to now is the local College radio station,CJSW. Have a listen online if you like.

I really can determine where all the good music has gone. I believe it's all drowning in the sea of commercialism out there.

Don't you get it. we are TOLD what music is good these days..!

I think, like others have said. Radio is awash in music, there are so many more genre's.
.A lot more crap to wade through, to get to the good stuff, whatever "good" may mean in your opinion..

It's like cable, or satellite TV...hundreds of channels, but lots of bad programming, and infomercials..

However, theres still a gem, to be found, here and there.

Define 'good' music! We all like something different? This issue is far too controversial...

...I think music has so many different genres these days it's hard to distinguish what's decent and what's not!

Music is good for padding the wallets of greedy music company executives nowadays.
