I hate posting threads about Ebola , but it wants keeping an eye on . It spreads easily and kills fast and the effective kill rate is as high 90% .
It takes 6-10 days only from infection to develop ebola virus disease.
All kinds of
hazmat kit are needed to deal with patients who have ebola and to clean infected premises safely . Frankly , it's a nightmare you never want to spread
.
But it is doing , again . In 2014 there was an outbreak in Liberia which saw it spread to the UK and to the US . All the immigration controls could do
was screen airline passengers at airports with temperature reading guns .
So far this time there isn't a travel ban from affected countries . What making the problem of containment at source worse , is the fact there is a
civil war going on trying to oust the current president/regime who should be leaving through imminent elections . Which as the article linked
describes , can't go ahead because 800 electronic voting machines have just been burnt in a fire .
Aid agencies and the UN are asking America for support to quieten the violence down and protect UN medics . But as stands there is an order which
decrees it is too dangerous to send American staff , of whatever description including soldiers , to the zone .
It would be great if America were to make its presence felt again where it is need . Last this happened in 2014 it took the weight of the internet ,
the fifth estate, to pressure the then leaders to act decisively , luckily enough before the outbreak of the pandemic became strong enough to cause
even more concern by spreading even further .
It was thought at the time that Western countries easily had the means to contain ebola , but the fact is , you do not want it on your home soil at
all . Remember last time , it spread through human error , people developed second bouts of the disease , they travelled around the country and
meanwhile the possibility of spreading millions of ebola virus spores to multiple recipients from the shedding of just one infectee was ever present
.
This time apparently there is an ebola vaccine . In some ways that's good and in some ways , very bad . If you can protect those dealing with it in
advance , then there'll a double barrier with the necessary hazmat . On the other hand , if it leads some in power and or medical pros to have less
respect and less fear of ebola , or if there became a real politics of ebola vaccines , there'll be biases to offset which wasn't previously the case.
In absolute worst case scenario if this was weaponized ebola with vaccine made available only to some and excuses being formed for sudden rapid spread
, then .... however we hope that's not the case .
