I mean like .... Wow !

The proposed construction will be the base for a collaboration between JAXA and All Nippon Airways researching Avatar technology for space missions , the building will be known as the Avatar X robotics research center.

The space research center comprises the entire campus. The building suspended above the crater will be the Avatar X robotics research center.

Avatar X is a partnership between JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and ANA (All Nippon Airways.) They are developing so-called "Avatar" technology which will allow people to control robots remotely, as in the movie "Avatar." With Avatar X, they hope to revolutionize space exploration, resource extraction, and other space-based activities.

Asteroid mining using Avatars , jobs of the future.

On the Avatar X website, it says, "AVATAR X aims to capitalize on the growing space-based economy by accelerating development of real-world Avatars that will enable humans to remotely build camps on the Moon, support long-term space missions and further explore space from afar." Such a futuristic endeavour calls for a futuristic building, and the new robotics research center certainly is that. Along with its translucent panels and steel frame, it will have partitions made of carbon fibre, floor plates made out of honeycomb aluminium, and fibre-reinforced plastic trims. All these design features will help reduce the weight of this multi-storey structure.

That would be a beautiful building for what is an exciting field of research , really hope it gets the go ahead.

How do you get into the damned thing?

Tight wire walk?

Or the bridge on the right hand side.

That's dumb. Sorry.

Much cheaper to send pre programmed bots to do the job and communicate avatar via satellites than doing all of that mess.

It's a boon.

Camouflaged! Sneaky buggers. It'll be a fun ride during an earthquake.

I wonder if anything like that will ever be built in the US. How far behind will we fall?

I'm sure in the coming decades the US will get a chance to send probes to the moon to photograph other nations successful lunar missions debris too.

Hell, considering the long term effects of Fukushima, I would redirect my focus as well about leaving the planet.

I don't give two snips about Japan's 'space program' or any other exploratory action the world in general comes up with. Japan and all other countries need to FOCUS on what can and should be done about Fukushima.

NOW.

What about the long term effects of 3 Mile Island and the other 149 nuclear plant accidents that have occurred within the US, not to mention the numerous nuke tests.

Americans have had far longer to marinate in all that radiation.

The disaster that was Fukushima is not necessarily as major, or as un-remediated, as some would paint it.

Only problem with what I can see with Avatars is if the human controller is on earth you with have a time delay with say a robot on Mars. Not very safe or efficient.

"The disaster that "WAS" Fukushima......" Good luck with that. A 15 million year HALF life is more of a "IS"!!

Show us oh wise and informed chr0naut, the "not necessarily as major, or as un-remediated, as some would paint it." proof..

I love it, I really hope they succeed beyond all our wildest dreams.
I think what the world needs now is alot more positive, unique and functional projects like this so that we can all start to focus more on the greatness that humanity is capable of, rather than the current irrational xenophobia, division and selfish ugliness that currently seems to be dominating our collective consciousness.

Ummm...you just log onto your Avatar...then voila your at work...all from the comfort of your home...

What’s not to like...

Actually...this is the future of raw materials asteroid/extra terrestrial mining...there’s absolutely no reason to send a body...when an Avatar bot will do just as well...at reduced cost...

No food...no atmospherics...and a plus side employability to the driver’s/operators...

I wrote about this some years ago while creating a company and it’s advertising in a digital design class...

Being a SciFi/Science nut...I chose to do a future company that used these same principles where all of the manufacturing and raw materials came from and were kept in space...all while the Earth was healed of pollution and restored while everyone partook in the quintillion’s of profit...

It was a fun project and imaging the possible future scenarios made me want to live forever...

Then along came Elon Musk and landing his first stage boosters...and suddenly it didn’t seem so far fetched after all...

Now this concept...it’s like the pieces of that digital design project might just coalesce...

It’s a good time to be alive...

And here I thought I was somewhat unique...ah well...life among the marinated...

The predominant radioactive isotopes at Fukushima are Uranium 232 and Plutonium 238. They have half lives of 68.9 years and 87.7 years, respectively.

There are other decay nucleotides produced and many have longer half lives but, if the half life is longer, they are less radioactive and would be likely to be in far smaller abundances that the main ones, probably being indistinguishable from natural background radiation sources even today, so close in time to the disaster.

Fukushima update Nov 8, 2018 to all Embassies, Consular posts and International Organizations in Japan)

Although the internet doom porn sounds quite exciting, it is hard to argue with the actual science.

That's a large enough document that I'm not going to spend time to go through. I stopped at:

All the test results during the month of October have confirmed that the radiation levels of sampled water were substantially below the operational targets set by TEPCO (these operational targets are well below the density limit specified by the Reactor Regulation). The results of these analyses were also confirmed by third-party organization (Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel Co., Ltd, Kaken Co., Ltd and Tohoku Ryokka Kankyohozen Co.). I

Call me a conspiracy theorist but I lose trust when the guilty parties declare everything is "below operational targets".
