70 yrs ago Inaugurated Largest Statue of Christ in the World: The King of Benalcazar

On this 2008 another religious monument a Magnus work of Art and Engineering is reaching its 70 anniversary. It was built in his time to be a sort of Rhodas Colossus or Liberty Statue of the Andes.

Decades have passed and still remains until our time as the largest Monument of Christ sculpture ever built around the World, in spite of more modern construction efforts to try to surpass its incredible dimensions.

For incredible that appears it is Not part of Sanctuary, nor a decorating a Cathedral, but is located in the middle of always green mountains where Coffee and Cacao are cultivated and that sometimes experience thick fog that is typical on the Andes.

This Marvel of the world is located in the region of Caldas at Central Colombia, in a valley between mountains as well as volcanos and high glaciers.

It is called Christ the King of Benalcazar, from the site it is standing named after the Spanish Conqueror Sebastian of Benalcazar, the same one that is credited to be the first European ever to have been informed by the Aborigines about the so famous El Dorado Legend, a half myth half real fact that shaped the conquest of Colombia as nothing else by the Europeans.

It was built in 1948 in an inter Andean valley of the region of Caldas, that is famous since centuries to produce the best coffee of the world. The monument was not erected with funding coming from government or State sources but apparently the sum of efforts of peoples of the region interested in to have it.

The statue is extremely strong but it is hallowed, with interior stairs that allow the visitors to go up to the head of the Christ. It is with its base as large as the Statue of Liberty without her Pedestal. The stairs inside have 154 steps from the base to the head, to go from the surrounding soil to the top of the 45 mts of height the statue.

This is a Christ that is also standing up and with his arms extended but more in attitude of praying to God father or offering mass than in the pose of embracing the world that has for instance the Corcovado Christ the King of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

This Christ the King monument is not just the largest of the world but compete to be among the Highest located ones of the planet. It is located not so far from the city of Manizales and on a main Highway that cross the Andes.
