In 1953 an 18-year-old apprentice plumber, named Harry Martindale, was working in the cellar of the Treasurer's House which is a landmark building in York England. While he was working he reported to hear the sounds of Trumpets fill the cellar out of nowhere. Harry scrambled down from the ladder and hid in a corner of the room. His attention was pulled to the pillar on the far side of the room because he stated he say a Roman soldier materialize from within the pillar and enter into the cellar. Following the first soldier were 12 to 20 more soldiers complete with horses and carts. The soldiers never noticed Harry and continued slowly across the cellar to the opposite pillar before exiting the cellar through the wall. Additionally, another man named Frank Green also reported seeing the procession of ghostly soldiers just as Harry.

Harry reported that all the soldiers looked short, wore green shirts, had round shields, and all carried swords on their right hip. However, even though the Treasurer's House was built directly on top of a Roman road the details that Harry gave did not match up with the known Roman soldier details. At the time historians thought all Roman soldiers wore burgundy shirts, carried square shields and wore their swords on their left hip.

However, Martindale was vindicated years later when excavations in York proved the descriptions given by Martindale. The graves of Roman soldiers in the area were found to have green shirts, round shields and were buried with their swords on their right side. Why is this? Because these were not regular Roman soldiers but rather reserve soldiers and this was what they wore.

It appears that way. I was flipping through random Wikipedia articles when I happened upon the Treasurer's House page. It had a tidbit about this story so I started to research.

I find it pretty amazing that at first the details Harry gave were laughed at, but then he was later proved correct by physical evidence. I would consider this one of the more plausible supernatural stories I have ever heard.

I saw a dramatization of this story on a TV show years ago, pretty cool if real

That's some story. We hear this type of thing happening a lot throughout history. Almost like the earth is replaying an incident that took place that had a huge impact on the place in question.
I always wonder if this is happening all around us all the time, but only visible to us when our state of mind is above normal levels.

Interesting story.
